OT- Anyone go see Obama at Toyota Center? - WoodlandsOwl - 02-20-2008 12:57 AM

What was it like?

Place looked like it was full and rocking on TV..

RE: OT- Anyone go see Obama at Toyota Center? - CTRice10 - 02-20-2008 02:07 AM

In short, it was full and rocking.
If you'd like a longer recounting, send me a PM, I don't want to bore anyone on the board, unless someone else expresses interest...

RE: OT- Anyone go see Obama at Toyota Center? - MartelOwl_08 - 02-20-2008 07:12 AM

well, they spent 2h 30min toying w/ everyone's excitement, then Obama finally came out for an hour-long rousing talk. if you've been following the campaign trail, nothing overly new in this talk, just reiterating a lot of the stuff you probably already have heard. as for me, being relatively uninformed and uninvolved w/ politics in general, it was the first time i heard his plans and i guess he did a decent job of tying the loose ends in my mind.

but seriously, bringing two different people out in the span of half an hour to get the crowd cheering was an idiotic move to buy time or whatever. being my first ever presidential rally, it was a good experience. but i don't think i'll ever set foot on a presidential rally again.

RE: OT- Anyone go see Obama at Toyota Center? - Fort Bend Owl - 02-20-2008 09:10 AM

I'm curious - what do you think the crowd breakdown was in terms of black vs. white?

Hillary's in big-time trouble. I'm wondering if she even keeps going to Ohio and Texas at this point. Maybe she does, but I bet she starts scaling back her operations. Either that or she has to go very negative. I don't see much other options for her than that.

RE: OT- Anyone go see Obama at Toyota Center? - Tiki Owl - 02-20-2008 09:16 AM

FBO, agree completely with your analysis. Hillary's hopes in Texas hinge on the Hispanic vote and at this point I just don't see it being big enough to overcome the large turnout that Obama is generating among his supporters. The turnout this year over other primary years is making a huge difference.

RE: OT- Anyone go see Obama at Toyota Center? - WoodlandsOwl - 02-20-2008 09:31 AM

FBO and Tiki, I agree on your analysis completely. Watching on TV the timing is everything.. I suspect the two act Obama “warm up” was to buy time to get Hillary out on the stage in Ohio.

Hillary was barely 5 minutes into her spiel about how you can go to her website and give, $5, $10, and how some woman in a minimum wage job in Ohio scraped up 10 bucks to give to Hillary because she “inspired her”….and then

WHAM…..

All the networks and cable news channels cut over to Obama speaking in Houston…..

They didn’t even do a “split screen” —it was all Obama

If Hillary is placing all her cards on high hispanic voter turnout in San Antonio, the Valley, and El Paso, she is SOL because those areas don’t have as many delegates as Houston, Dallas, and El Paso.

Plus getting them to the polls is one thing.. getting them back to go to the caucus at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday night is next to impossible logistics.

Expect in her desperation to win at all costs Hillary will be digging all the way to China (home of her biggest contributors) to find dirt on Obama.

Expect the Clinton "slime machine" to:

1. Use the cocaine card on Obama
2. Find dirt on Obama’s wife
3. Use extreme pressure and other coercive measures on Superdelegates to get them to vote for Hillary.
4. Poach Obama delegates
5. Dig up dirt on Obama campaign officials in Texas, Ohio, and everywhere else.

If Hillary is going to go negative, she'd better hustle up. If she doesn't win Texas and Ohio convincingly, the pledged delegate gap may be too big to overcome. I'm a proud Republican and probably one of the most anti-Hillary people you could find, but even I admit that the media's glowing coverage and bias has been a huge factor in the free pass and positive publicity that has helped provide Obama's wave of momentum. Eh, it's been interesting to follow.

I wonder if supposed Republican cross- over to vote for Obama just to get rid of Hillary will still happen if the polls show Obama with a large national lead ...

I don't understand why Rush Limbaugh and his fellow cronies aren't telling folks to vote for Hillary in the open primaries in an effort to stop the Obama momentum. Maybe he is - I haven't listened to him much lately.

McCain would beat Hillary. McCain vs. Obama is going to be a different story IMO unless we suffer another major terrorist attack between now and November.

I'm a big-time conservative and I like Obama.

In fact alot of conservatives like him over McCain.

One thing that will kill Obama is that his parents are Muslim. The American Public is never going to accept that.

In fact, even her people are saying that if she doesn't win by convincing double digits in TX and OH, she's functionally done, with or without PA.

I expect a large cross-over vote, especially if McCain has wrapped up all the delegates he needs before the polls open here. Question is whether it is anti-Billary or anti-more difficult candidate to beat in the open election.

I thought the Republican strategy was to get crossovers to vote for Hillary so she'd get the nomination and be the easiest to beat in November. Now you say that the strategy was (or is) to crossover to vote for Obama to "get rid of Hillary"?
Sounds to me like the Republicans don't have their sh** together all that much.
Reminds me of Will Rogers' comment that he wasn't a member of any "organized" political party. "I'm a Democrat!"
How the tides have turned. Now the political party that's completely disorganized and dissheveled is the Republican party. They can't even agree upon how to direct their crossover voters.
Will Rogers....roll over in your grave. You're now a proud member of the GOP!

The problem isn't that "his parents are Muslim." The problem is that people are going to keep spreading misinformation like this between now and November.

I'm sure Hillary will find a way to use that kind of misinformation here soon. She's desperate. Besides, if the internet says it, it's got to be real, right?...03-banghead

I'm not spreading any misinformation. I might even vote for Obama as a Republican.

I'm just saying, that fact could keep him from getting into the white house. Even though Obama is baptized.

His dad is Muslim, his mom..no one knows but it could spin she is as well. Being how religious they are doesn't really matter to the American media, as long as pops is Muslim and Obama was raised that way...will raise eyebrows.

I certainly don't even care if Obama was Muslim. I think he's a fine individual.

But with security as the number 1 agenda in the United States, I think the Conservative media will eat him alive. IMO.

My subscription to the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy Newsletter" lapsed....

I can see the Republican cross-over working two ways...

Cross over and vote for Hillary to drag things out until Denver, possibly causing a Floor Fight at the Convention when she pulls all her dirty tricks out of her bag, causing chaos and a divided Democratic Party. If Hillary can't have the nomination, she will take it out on Obama before Denver. After all, its "supposed to be HER nomination"...

Cross over and vote for Obama because he will fold like Dukakis did in 1988. Both Dukakis and Obama are running on "Platforms of Platitudes"... and when nailed down to specifics on what all is involved and what it will cost... the voter support disappears.

Right now "hope" and "change" are cheap...

No, I didn't read this on the internet. I saw this on CNN 4 years ago when he was at the Democratic convention.

His parents are both dead, but his father was a non-practicing Muslim and his step-father, Lolo Soetoro was a Wahhabist (Muslim) who moved the family to Indonesia. His mother was an atheist.

Your basic point was correct. No question: His "funny" name and partially Muslim heritage will hurt. I wasn't questioning your motives, and I knew that you were talking about how it could damage him - not that it bothered you.

But you put it out there, anyway. "His parents are Muslim" is not exactly a "lie," but it's no better than a half-truth. His father and mother aren't anything - both have been dead a long time. His mother appears to have had no religion. In your next post, you tossed out the implication he was raised Muslim. He wasn't. All of this, I think, can fairly be labeled "misinformation."

Sorry. I know I don't need to waste space here educating people.
