The greatest weapon the B1G has in expansion - georgia_tech_swagger - 02-28-2013 02:10 AM

......... the ACC scheduling office.

With friends like these, who needs enemies?

Quote:The ACC football schedule released Monday has led Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson and athletic department officials to believe they’ve again drawn the short straw. That conclusion may have repercussions for Tech’s future participation in the league’s Thursday night package.

Johnson’s frustrations with the schedule were many, some of which may have been out of the league’s hands. But an open date for the second week of the season, a Thursday night game against archrival Virginia Tech with five days’ rest, an unfilled request to have an open date after the Oct. 12 BYU game and four consecutive Coastal Division games top the list.

... Bamford said that Tech will “strongly look at” booking nonconference games for the first two or three weeks of the season – which has been Johnson’s preference – in order to avoid such a situation in years to come. ...

A variety of factors, including Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech’s nonconference schedules, ESPN’s desire for Tech to play both Virginia Tech and Clemson on Thursday night and appropriate spacing for the open dates, may have made a Thursday night game where both teams had a bye week prior to the game difficult, if not impossible. Still, Johnson called it “ridiculous” to stage one of the league’s marquee games under such a circumstance.

... Another frustration was Tech’s being scheduled to play eight consecutive weeks between open dates, something that only Pitt and Virginia will also do. Tech’s two longest road trips, Miami and BYU, are also on back-to-back weeks. Further, Tech had asked for a bye after the BYU game – as it is a long trip and also because it would coincide with fall break – and didn’t get it. ...

... Also, four of Tech’s six Coastal opponents play a nonconference opponent before playing Tech and a fifth, North Carolina, has an open date. It will be the fourth time in Johnson’s six seasons that the Tar Heels will have that advantage. ...

Further, Pittsburgh’s opponent prior to playing Tech Nov. 2 is Navy, which runs an offense similar to the Jackets’.

“Just randomly by computer, I imagine,” Johnson said with sarcasm.

Even Tech’s returning to Clemson for a second consecutive road game – a request initiated by former athletic director Dan Radakovich, now at Clemson – perturbed Johnson. Bamford said that Tech pulled the request off the table after Radakovich left Tech in October. However, the ACC scheduled Tech to return to Clemson, one of six repeat-site games for 2013 intended to balance home and away schedules.

Said Johnson, “It worked out good for Dan.”

CPJ has to stop crying. The schedule isn't going to work out every year for everybody. Last year GT had 6 of their first 8 games at home which is a great opportunity to build momentum. However, they got destroyed by Middle Tennessee and BYU - at home. CPJ had to know if you schedule home and home games with western teams you might have a travel issue with future schedules.

Can't argue with you there. The acc does themselves no favors by how they do divisions and schedule. One thing that always perturbs me is how inconsistent they are with scheduling rivalry games. Pick a date and stick with it for your marquee rivalry games

GT is 11-2 against Carolina since 2000, what advantage?

You've got to take those considerations into account and between this and the ACC's habit of scheduling big games for FSU, GT, and Clemson right before their SEC rivals it isn't good. From the outside it looks a lot like apathy.

Going forward I know the Big 12 is revamping their scheduling in non-fb to help WVU limit the travel burden they have. This year was so short notice they were given Mizzou's slate but the expectation in the future is that they'd be scheduled on the road in pairs of games so they can travel less. Play KU & KSU days apart and BU & UT. Fly to one, drive to the other, then back home.

That's one advantage of having your own cable network vs. being owned by a cable network.

Does BTN do weeknight games?

I can't believe I am defending Swofford & the ACC.....but GaTech just needs to win their damn games.

UVA got screwed too. VT gets a bye before us while we go to Miami. Early bye before VMI. Rough November run. We weren't thrilled.

Frankly, it's all relative though. GT got really screwed - no doubt.

1963 / 140 Rule / 6-6 Vote of Presidents / Dodd was right but the decision was wrong.

Half the league had byes before VT last year. Get over it. You won't be bowling anyway.

GT needs to suck it up. Stop scheduling games during the conference schedule and you have more flexibility. This is the first time in 10 years that VT won't have a home Thursday game. Sometimes other teams have to step up.

If CPJ is attempting to prove that his offense can succeed at a major program, his complaints about Pitt scheduling Navy are rather petulant. Either his style is a legitimate threat or its success is based upon its unfamiliarity. You can't have it both ways.

Does anyone really thing GT would get better scheduling treatment in the B1G?

Wake up. The only reason the B1G would want GT in the conference is so they can make Atlanta residents pay them for watching Ohio State and Michigan games, whether they actually watch or not.

Do what you want. But at least do it with your eyes open.

The ACC isn't doing anything to prevent GT and UVa from looking around for a better option. If anything, they're making it easy for them to decide their future might be better served elsewhere...

That's true. It's as if Mike Leach complained to the Pac-12 office because a Pac-12 team scheduled a non-con game against one of Leach's proteges to help them get ready to play Wazzu. Wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened and won't be the last.

Also, in the case of Pitt, it's likely that they agreed to play Navy in 2013 well before Pitt was invited to join the ACC.

ESPN strikes again.
