Blaudschun says Big East agreement "could be announced Thursday" - Wedge - 03-05-2013 01:32 AM

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/bigeast/2013/03/04/catholic-seven-7-negotiations/1963671/

Quote:After a weekend of talks and negotiations, the Big East Conference has put together a framework of an agreement allowing member schools known as the Catholic 7 to break away from the Big East by July and take the "Big East'' name, according to a person familiar with the discussions.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matter was not to be discussed publicly.

The person said and agreement on the split could be announced Thursday and added that the Big East football schools expect to have a new conference name as well as a new site for the conference basketball tournament, which has been anchored in New York's Madison Square Garden since 1983.

Other than the "framework" comment, and the suggestion that an announcement will be made Thursday, and that the FB schools might announce a new name and hoops tournament site, most of this looks like what Blaudschun wrote on his own website on Sunday. UConn, USF, and Cincinnati get a windfall; the incoming FB schools split a total of $10 million between them; Notre Dame to the ACC in fall 2013.

I dont think the football schools are announcing a name on Thursday. I think thats just clumsy sentence structure. I think hes just strung together several unrelated facts. He's saying the deal will be announced Thursday and then is simnply going on to say the confernece plans to come up with a new name and may have thier first tournanment in Harford (or not, depending on the B1G).

I think that's unnecessarily pessimistic. (Which is hard to do with that crowd, I know.) In his blog, he said the same stuff, except for the bit about the name, and with the addition of pimping Hartford for the conference tournament.

I don't think it's a stretch to assume that someone "A-doy, but boss, if we sell the Big East name, what's our name, boss? Huh boss?" Seriously, there were 11 presidents and ADs at the Atlanta meeting, plus Aresco and whoever else came from Providence. There had to be a triple-digit IQ in the room somewhere.

Hartford as the new tourney site should tell the newbies all they need to know about their budding lives in the nBE. Why not New Orleans, or Houston, or Dallas, or Memphis, or one of a couple locations in Florida? At least Cincinnati would be closer to the rest of the new league, but no, let's put it at the northeastern edge of the conference. UConn is the new Providence.

I read the JerseyGuy blog to mean that Hartford was for the first year only.

Hartford isn't a bad site for the first year considering that Rutgers, Temple, and UConn will give the conference three northeastern teams. Louisville fans travel well too. I would expect the conference tournament to make it down to Memphis, Orlando, or Dallas eventually.

First it was Monday of last weel, then Wednesday, then Friday, then Monday again, then Wednesday again, now Thursday. The constant pushing back of the announcement is troublesome. The sides are still $20M apart. Blaudschun's source must be a BE official who is overly optimistic, rather than someone at one of the schools involved.

I think PNC Arena in Raleigh would be the perfect site for the tournament. [/selfish]

It will be in Memphis

Hartford. Lulz.

There were eleven presidents there. And they didn't agree on selling the name--so it's not a stretch that they never even got to the next step of agreeing on a new name. Hell, they couldn't even agree with Aresco that the ESPN deal was a "match" worth signing. This group is not on the same page--they are no longer even reading from the same book. No legitimate conference that gives a crap about its future sells a well known 34 year old brand name for a million a school. Nobody gives up thier best recruiting tool. Anyone that thinks there was any sort of agreement or unity in that room is not looking at the big picture or the long term view.

There is only one Big East entity that has any reason to be optimistic...or should I say former Big East entity....

I agree that the Friday meeting probably yielded no agreement (no agreement announced, no statements-of-support from the presidents/ADs). But I have to think that the argued over the major issues. The TV contract, whether to sell the name, how to split the exit fees, what about entry fees. So I have to think that someone of the 25 or so people in the room at least raised (shouted out) the question of a new name.

After that meeting (presumably), at least UConn, UC and USF got on the same page, judging by JerseyGuy's blog. (You'd need all three of those to agree to a deal with the C-7, I think.) It's not a huge stretch to imagine that those three could reach a decision between the Metro, the "Eastern Athletic Conference", the Big 11, Eastern 12 or "Big America." You don't even need much of a logo--just pick a color and typeface and send a grad student intern to Kinko's, so you have it ready for the announcement.

It only takes those three, yeah. As for selling the name... probably, as of now, the Big East name is co-owned by the schools who are in the conference today. So UConn, USF, and Cincinnati are not getting paid for the entire name, because each of those three only owns one piece of it and each of the C-7 schools owns a piece as well. UConn, USF, and Cincinnati are just selling their three pieces.

Get this done already

Get Tulsa in.

Move forward.

The Mwc is just getting stronger

The new metro needs some peace and quiet

I would hope the payout will have some strings attached to it for the old be 3. Like you forfeit the money if you don't stay for three or five years.

What exactly is forcing the incoming schools to join at this juncture? I understand the league they're coming from has already found replacements but why not play hardball and tell UConn, Cincinnati, and USF to share equally or they're going to be without a home next year. The incoming schools and Temple could form their own league with ECU, Tulane, Navy, and a handful of others and get a similar TV deal anyway, right? USF, UConn, and Cincinnati would get a good payday for one season from the exit fees and name then be up ****'s creek when they don't have a league to play in for 2014. It seems like the incoming schools have the upper hand.

You can't tell me

RE: Blaudschun says Big East agreement "could be announced Thursday" - KevinSmith - 03-05-2013 11:58 AM

This biggest problem with all of this is it is continuing the dysfunctional "big east" family with a different name, different groups with different agendas: (i) UConn, UC and USF - got screwed in realignment moves and feel entitled to bigger share as compensation, (ii) Temple - joined early for FB but apparently did not get full share rights as BB not to join until 2014 so they get $1MM, and (iii) Temple and all new members - got screwed in realighment moves when FB value schools bolted old BE and now are getting screwed by UConn, UC and USF with pocket change amount of money (I assume remant BE-3 will at least waive entrance fees for these teams so its really about $3-4MM/school in value.

I will not be surprised if it falls apart at some point. Also as time moves on it could also develop old BE - BB v. FB issues as 4 BB schools (UConn, UC, Temple and Memphis) may end up in league with 6-7 other teams with yearly 100+RPIS and be required to play them 12 games per year (40% of the schedule), requiring agreesive OOC schedule (new BE will likely have the same "bad bottom half of league" problem as well in losing BB royalty in Louisville, Syracuse and UConn)

No surprise here -- they have to wait for the divorce agreement to be finalized:

Not sure whats in it fr Ohio and NIU maybe a bit more money but certainly nothing to offset the hemorrhaging that travel would require.

I know people will start tossing around the idea of pods, and super duper conference mergers or alliances but this all seems to be spinning down and the motivation for a mid major to jump to another mid major conference is just not there.

We've got a fist full of dollars and plenty of options. Here's how I see your plan playing out:

Football only to MWC for UC, UConn, and USF. Won't work you say? I guess you're right except that Boise would loooooove to have the best football names from nBE and recruiting in Fla. Couple that with the fact that the A10 would love to have some UC, UConn and USF basketball right about now. Oh, did I mention that we have a war chest to offset any travel costs? No? I guess that matters too.

Meanwhile.............the rest of the nBE has accomplished absolutely nothing.

UC, UConn and USF in the A10 and MWC. If there is no change in realignment in the next few years, will the bigger conferences really want them. So they are stuck at the a10 and MWC. I am not seeing this and would they take this chance,, especially USF. I would say, though, that if you are a BB fan, this is acceptable.
