So,
if conferences go to 9 game conference schedules
AND
some conferences go to forcing a 1P5 OOC game
you are at 10 games covered.
That leaves you 2 to do with what you want to. *I'd say the P5 game of choice would be more "agenda based" than normal OOC scheduling.
A few thoughts come to mind...
More games in a season? 13? 14?
What will happen with some of these guys taking FCS opponents. I saw someone on here saying they shouldn't count towards bowl eligibility or RPI sort of like playing DIIs in basketball. If they somehow let them then I think this road goes toward FCS teams wanting to move up to 1a, and thus being used solely for their 1a scheduling requirements for the transition period.

Agreed, you are either a winner or a loser in that scenario in the regular season. That said, if you made it to your Conference Championship game @ 7-6 you could be 7-7/.500 and lose your bowl and be 7-8.

I think the answer is 12 regular season games. 6 home and 6 not at home.
but to throw teams a bone, they also get 1 extra game that is an exhibition game. Does not count in the standings or the stats. That's the game where P5 teams can still schedule another home game against inferior FCS schools who get their big pay out.

Well, if they would do away with silly divisions and just go with basketball-style scheduling for football then the odds of ever getting a 7-6 team in the CG would be slim to none.

My rule of thumb is that if the SEC and Big Ten won't agree to it, then it's DOA. The conferences want MORE autonomy as opposed to less - they will absolutely never agree to a mandate regarding road games in the non-conference schedule. Until the P5 are actually punished financially for guarantee games (meaning the point where the payout for the extra home game isn't worth the lower ticket sales), they're not changing that at all (and that's going to be driven by the marketplace as opposed to NCAA regulations).

Indeed it does. It likely gets the season started a couple of weeks into August, when fans are starved for something besides golf to watch. And once we expand to an 8 team playoff, the champion will have played 17 games, which will help acclimate them to the longer NFL season. What's not to like?

I agree that goofus proposes the ideal scenario, but I also agree it will never happen because of what Frank said.
So, perhaps we could at least get the FBS v FCS games moved to late August as a 13 game (strictly exhibition), even if OOC home vs road limitations are never put into place.

Side note; 13 games is not unprecedented. I used to work NC State football games, and back in '02 the Wolfpack played 13 games not counting their bowl game. Don't know how they did that because IIRC back in '02 a lot of schools were still playing 11 game schedules, but it happened.
