UMass Football - stever20 - 06-05-2015 07:55 AM Just was seeing on a CFB scheduling site the UMass schedules posted for the next few years... http://www.umassathletics.com/sports/m-footbl/future-schedules.html 2016- they have 10 games so far, with only 3 home games. No FCS games yet so would need only 1 more FBS home game to be set. 2017- they have 9 games so far, 4 home. No FCS game so they are set. 2018- 6 games scheduled, 3 home. So really right now, get 1 more home FBS game in 2016 and they'll be fine. Would kind of think UAB if they are classified FBS would be a very likely source. Their rivalry game that who they played the most was Boston College. A cross state rivalry. RE: UMass Football - Steve1981 - 06-05-2015 08:09 AM We play both Boston College and UConn in 2016. We'll have some question marks by then as QB etc. The UConn game should be fun for both fan bases at Gillette. Could be north of 40k fans in the seats. Like playing at least 3 games on campus for the atmosphere and to get that push for adding capacity. However Gillette has been a good selling point for the 2016 schedule. They play at Hawaii in 2016. So UMass can schedule 13 games. They really need 2 more home games and another one and done pay game. RE: UMass Football - MWC Tex - 06-05-2015 08:45 AM Doesn't a FBS school need to have a minimum of 5 home games to keep up its status? 2016 would need 2 more home games and not 1. So UMass needs to worry really about 1 game. RE: UMass Football - Steve1981 - 06-05-2015 08:47 AM Yes, a FCS buy game would take care of one of those games. No I understand 1 can be FCS but how willing is a FCS school wanting to play at UMASS for a much lower price than other FBS schools? Not many FCS schools have 9/24 open as that is when they are in full conference play. RE: UMass Football - Steve1981 - 06-05-2015 08:52 AM There is a large pool of close FCS teams in NE and New York. with the CAA and Patriot leagues. Holy Cross, Stony Brook, Albany, Maine, NH, URI, Fordham, CCSU etc which are all a bus ride away from McGuirk. RE: UMass Football - No Bull - 06-05-2015 08:56 AM UMass has some upside but won't make it long as an idependant. I am not sure what the plan is. I think not joining the MAC for all sports was a mistake...I am sure most anyone who likes UMass FBS football agrees with me. You realize that this will be our first year at the FBS scholarship limit. Most transitional teams take some time to add the beef up front along with FBS speed and depth. Patience and watch us this year. cfbhuddle had some positive things to say about us. Quote:But in 2014, UMass showed its first signs of life as an FBS program. The Minutemen finished 3-9, but all three wins came in Mid-American Conference play, surpassing the league’s win total in league from the previous two seasons. http://cfbhuddle.com/2015/06/02/going-out-on-limb-for-2015-umass-goes-bowling/ RE: UMass Football - Carolina_Low_Country - 06-05-2015 09:13 AM UMASS should expand their stadium to around ~40,000 and do it similar to TCU, Houston, Cincinnati, and Baylor. Make your expansion / renovation a modern luxury stadium with lower capacity where sellouts are easier and you have all the big time commodities. Boston College has a 43,000 person stadium in the ACC and UCONN is only 40,000, so FBS New England schools do not need a big stadium and Gillette is to big and to far from campus. RE: UMass Football - CameramanJ - 06-05-2015 09:36 AM I think the word you're looking for is patience. Patients makes UMass sound sickly. UMass football fans are generally fans of the hoops program as well and would have been upset with trading the A10 for the MAC. They are in a tough spot. They need to man up and get the stadium situation taken care of. You nailed it with every word of this post. Missed out on one key thing though: Stadium renovations won't cut it - there needs to be additional infrastructure around the stadium for parking and just plainly making it easier to get to the stadium. There is one single lane road that leads to the stadium from off campus, another that leads to it from campus, and then what amounts to a dirt road to get behind the stadium for additional parking. It wouldn't be as hard as you think - the eastern FCS leagues are smaller (7-8 members) so 9/24 is likely to be non-conference for many of them. Monmouth would be a likely candidate - they play in the 7 team Big South, so they only have 6 conference games. Mass. for all sports, but Temple ruined that plan. They could still try to go to 18. The rumor schools that could be part of them? Stony Brook Fordham Richmond VCU (was looking at buying the city's stadium that seats 12,000 and thinking of adding football at the time.) Delaware James Madison Southern Illinois Western Kentucky Northern Iowa Wayne State, Mich. (former founder in the MAC, but now in D2.) Illinois State Missouri State Mankato State North Dakota State Indiana State Liberty Maine New Hampshire URI Old Dominion Appalachian State Charlotte C. Conn. State Imagine if they could have snared some of the schools that C-USA and Sun Belt invited? RE: UMass Football - UConn-SMU - 06-05-2015 06:39 PM I still don't know why they didn't go all-in for the MAC. Can you imagine if UCONN went all sports to the MAC or CUSA to keep its football in an FBS conference...? Gotta protect your best asset. UMass made the right call. |
