2020: 1 FBS home game , 3 away games
2021-23: 3 FBS home games, 5 away games

By rule they must have 5 FBS home games a year. That's 42% of games that must be at home. But after 2017, they have 10 home games out of the 30 games they have scheduled (33%). That's really pushing the limit.
One FCS opponent may be used to meet the five home game requirement. There almost certainly will be a FCS opponent each year for 2020-23, and by playing a 7th road game in 2018, this will give UMass more flexibility for 2019.

Keep in mind if UMass joins a conference in 2018, at least seven teams are going to be looking for games on relatively short notice.

UMass is in much better shape for 2018 than New Mexico State, which right now has a single game at Minnesota scheduled for that season.

If i hadn't seen what happened in the last 2 years i would be worried, and in fact i was really worried about UMass having a chance of even 1 year of independence before.

As of July 27 2014 UMass had 4 games on the schedule 1 P5 Home game, 2 P5 away games and 1 FCS home game for the 2016 season. http://web.archive.org/web/20140727142731/http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-16/2016-umass-minutemen-football-schedule.php

Now in 2016 Umass has 2 P5 homer games 3 G5 home games and an FCS.

Many will argue that this years schedule is a gauntlet, but I like it a lot better than the MAC schedule. And next year isn't nearly as tough

http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-16/2016-umass-minutemen-football-schedule.php

http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-17/2017-umass-minutemen-football-schedule.php

UMass has shown it has the ability to get 1 for 1's with lower level P5's and most G5's, some on short notice. Scheduling as an Indy for UMass isn't the issue anymore. Exposure and money are a different story (although the exposure is much better than expected, a step up from the MAC for sure).

UMass isn't filling the scheudle out too far in advance to keep the buy out's and rescheduling fee's lower if/when it get's invited to a conference. I get that it looks bad form first glance but there seems to be a method to the madness.

Wasn't UMass in the MAC as of July 2014? So it's not a surprise that you had few OOC games scheduled at the time. It's impressive that you got this year scheduled, but it came at a steep cost in future games.

And for some reason you already have 2 buy-games scheduled with lower-level P5s after 2020 (Indiana & Colorado), which makes no sense for an indy that is struggling to find enough home games. Why would you waste a valuable away game on such a low profile opponent with no home game in return?

About your 2016 vs 2017 schedule: That's the opposite way that Cincinnati would look at it. If we had UMass's 2017 home slate (ODU, Ohio, Hawai'i, GSU, App St, Maine) we'd say good Lord who would want to buy season tickets to that? But UMass is saying that's a good schedule because there's more winable games. Interesting to see the perspective from a different fanbase 04-cheers

But one away buy game buys one home buy FCS game with plenty of money to spare if a sweetener is needed for some of the other contracts.

Six Go5 H/H gives 3 home games, 1 P5 away buy game, one FCS qualified home buy game brings it to 4 (though UMass has to be real careful in this strategy that the FCS school is an FBS qualifier) ... AFAIU, if all four are on campus, they can still use Gillette to count as one home game, which for a certain range of P5 schools increases the hope of filling that date. With four games to work with to get one more home game, there's also flexibility to use 1-2's to fill that.

Yup - the big thing now is that we recognize we need to get some wins in there if we ever want to build something. Maine is a nice/old regional rival for us that our fans will recognize, and App State we played in the National Championship game a while back, and people remember that game.

So we have a couple of games there that people will be interested in.

So I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade ... but what is the point of this thread continuing on??

Why doesn't each and every FBS school have its own thread spanning years and hundreds of posts??

Honestly, i had EXACTLY the same thought. Shouldn't this be on the independent board?

Well, UMass as an indy is a shaky situation long term. THat's not really going to change. "Can UMass survive long term?" is still a live question, and will be for years. That's not really true of any FBS school in a conference, and it's not true of BYU or Notre Dame or Army.

Actually, a semi-permanent thread about BYU's independent adventures wouldn't be a bad thing either. Will they every make it to the PAC (no) or Big XII (maybe)? Will they have to go crawling back to the MWC? Will they join some amped up version of the AAC?

Same goes for NMSU. But those schools don't have a couple of dedicated posters keeping that flame alive here. I don't see why the board would want to chase them away.

(Not speaking as a mod here--maybe the CSCR mods feel differently and close the thread. Maybe they don't. I don't have any say in that.)

Pretty simple, we need to align in a conference and this is the Conference Realignment board. It will be interesting to see how our young quarterback develops along the offense.

The defense has come a long way. It was extremely hard as a UMass fan to see Comis turn the ball over inside the 19 yard line for the second week in a row. Especially when the coach called a time out to go over the play. Boston College defense is good and sacked him 8 times and we lost the turnover battle by 2. Had a night to recover and again getting my spirits up and looking forward to our first true home game on campus.

Footnote, attendance was much smaller than expected, 25,112 and this game will not help. We still have 2 more power 5 teams and BYU to go but against everyone else looking to see the running game develop.

week 1: Florida 24 - 7
week 2: Boston College 26 - 7.

Isn't the B12 about to expand by 4 teams forcing another G5 shakeup?

If I'm UMass who is left out in the cold right now I'm viewing the situation intently.

There could be an opening in the AAC for them or the MAC should they lose a school and need a 12th.

That first game on campus, against FIU...if we can't win that one then we're in for a very long season. A season that won't help us out in any realignment bids too much.

I'm sure the MAC is standing pat. Would the AAC need a bottom feeder that badly? I doubt it.

Time for UMass to steal Idaho's playbook and knock on the Colonial's door.

RE: UMass Football - Steve1981 - 09-11-2016 11:25 AM

FCS is not an option. We have 3 years of planned Indy schedule play. No need to rush anything. There will be perhaps two realignment events during that time frame.

Not gonna happen. We'd lose more money on the program as an FCS school than we are today and will for at least the next few years (with the schedule that's been put together).

I would imagine that next year, NMSU would merit a thread on here. For a long time, there was an "all things GSU" for Georgia State.

Neither Army nor BYU is actively seeking a home that isn't addressed in another specific thread. For UMass this year and for NMSU starting next year their lack of a conference home is a more or less ongoing condition not tied to any particular conference.

I say, rename the thread to "All things UMass" and have a thread for "All things NMSU" next year for the Aggies and keep them here.

At 11? That's the scenario you are responding to.

That is not likely ... the inconvenience of unbalanced divisions is why the MAC exercised the option to ask UMass to go all-in and all-out in the first place.

Add UMass FB-only, 11 schools in BBall, that could work. If there was a better all-sports add available the MAC would prefer that, but it's not automatic that there would be.

1 No one has any idea what the B12 will do. standing pat or adding 2 or 4 are all possible, with 2 being the most likely.

2 yes UMass has to be paying attention.

3 MAC is not an option for them. that already was decided. They could have had an all sports there. AAC is the only possible move they have.
