RE: UMass Football - Steve1981 - 07-31-2017 10:40 AM

Guessing JerryBearCat view is the AAC wants to be P6.

UMass needs to create it's own momentum. Have their (our) small stadium start selling out and see real upgrade plans. Would be nice if the BB team rebuilds successfully with Matt McCall and starts dancing again.

Then the AAC can think about some sort of associate membership with no money involved, scheduling help that is mutually beneficial and bowl access only, if any other AAC team does not qualify etc.

Its a make or break year for you guys especially with 19 returning starters. No excuses

It's the next two years and there is this from Phil Steele

Quote:There are many ways to assess schedule strength. The most commonly used method is to combine opponents’ records from the previous season. By this metric, the toughest 2017 schedule belongs to the UMass Minutemen, whose opponents won 65.2% of their games in 2016.

P.S. panama, your stadium looks very nice.

Oh come on... When have I ever said that the AAC is the "Power6"? (Hint... NEVER)

That doesn't mean that I want to see UMass as part of my conference. I have been on the record saying that I think UMass should drop football and turn McGuirk into a lacrosse stadium.

UMass is one of the biggest mooches of an athletic department. You should have never tried to move your FB up to FBS level because UMass, like Idaho, NEVER has invested in an infrastructure consistent with FBS football. UMass brings nothing to the table for the AAC; the NE is not a "College Football Market" (it's a pro-football market with lots of small CFB teams) and UMass is no higher than the third place school in your own state (behind Boston College and even Harvard) in terms of interest. I have no doubt that the AAC would "help" UMass, but UMass does NOTHING to help the AAC or its members.

So... Nope.

RE: UMass Football - Bronco'14 - 07-31-2017 07:15 PM

UMass still hasn't found a Conference?

I think the only FBS conference you would've fit in is the MAC, and that obviously didn't work out. I think on our side, we may've been willing to keep you guys if we had that 14th member. Personally, I would've liked to see your football have gotten good. MAC is too Ohio-based.

I highly doubt the AAC takes UMass at this point. They would've already done it if they were going to. As stated, they would do nothing but drag the Conference down, just like they drove the MAC down. I don't think Independent will work forever either.

Maybe Conference USA? But really how different is CUSA then the MAC?

Also, that Georgia St stadium looks nice. Shame it won't be ever be full, though, unless you guys host Georgia Tech in a Bowl Game there.

Ohio was our only true peer and the only one to schedule us. Thank you for your defensive coordinator, Ed Pinkham. Buffalo was a team that was so easy to hate. Cheers. Our issue is that we wanted a multi-bid conference for BB and the MAC was close, but the A10 did not fall off fast enough. Said it on your board, Middle Tennessee with Kermit Davis would make the most sense. Given that Western Kentucky would have been a logical continuous footprint team #14.

RE: UMass Football - BigHouston - 07-31-2017 08:40 PM

I view UMass as an attractive program.

Biggest disappointment with them IMO was letting their basketball program fall a notch or two and completely alienate their football program... Had UMass been able to sustain their basketball at a competitive level, similar to what Wichita State is currently achieving extremely well and than perhaps invested 1million every other year to their football stadium we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

Yah, our coach Fleck who left to Minnesota said the coordinators and position coaches did all the work. You guys will like Pinkham.

I think you guys could've just joined as a full-on member, taken a small hit in basketball, and then bolted from the MAC (like you were planning on doing) when you got good/competitive in football. Now you're stuck with the A10 falling and football still without a conference and still with losing records. I think the A10 will rebound though.

I doubt the MAC would add MTSU and WKU. They have no need to leave their current conference. But yah, if the MAC wanted to expand, they'd work in our Conference.

We're stuck in the A10 in the sense that the AAC hasn't invited us, but with the MAC it was our choice so I wouldn't call us stuck and the A10 is pretty good

I wish there was a way that we (AAC) could invite UMass. It would provide a very nice rivalry with UConn (and we do want to keep them happy). And who could forget the Calipari-Chaney intensity of UMass/Temple in the 90's. I wish we'd also invite Dayton and VCU.

RE: UMass Football - Eldonabe - 08-01-2017 12:29 PM

Well the football in the A-10 is a little weak, but we are pretty happy with the hoops.....

Moving all of our sports to the MAC was a deal breaker. There is a pretty decent drop off in hoops that would not have sit well with everyone either. Granted our basketball has sucked for quite a while, but that should be over now.

Umass needs to win some games (indy or not) to get some momentum then we can figure out conference stuff. Right now we are an anchor to any conference we could be a part of.

I like UMass too, I think their football and basketball could blossom in the AAC... Investing in their facilities however remains a huge mystery and that could keep them from been considered if and when the AAC searches for a new future member.

But if the AAC was at 13 with UMass who would be future member 14??

Dayton n VCU don't bring much to the table, IMO

Problem with conference stuff for UMASS is that there are no openings and UMASS shut the door on the MAC. There is no room at the inn and there will be no room at the inn in the foreseeable future. If the AAC loses any schools they will reload from CUSA or the MWC, or with Army and schools from CUSA and the MWC. The other alternative will be to stay at 10 schools with a Championship Game if they lose 2 schools. If CUSA loses 2 schools they stay at 12. IF they lose 1 school they pick up a Sunbelt school or NM St. The Sunbelt stays at 10 schools or picks up NM St or another southern school within their region to get back to 10. The MAC flat out stays at 12 from hereon out. The Eastern / Northeastern exposure bug is done now that Temple burned them and UMASS refused to go all in for all sports. 04-cheers
