Baseball Recruiting - cr11owl - 04-12-2016 03:30 PM

We don't have a pinned thread on baseball signees for this year and singing period starts tomorrow. (Our basketball commits can also sign tomorrow).

Any word on potential signees? It looks like 247 sports does baseball recruits now. D1 also keeps a running list. Perfect game also keeps an unofficial list.

D'Mond LaFond Cuero RHP/ 3B 6'-2'' 175 (247 says commit but his dad's Twitter says undecided)
Josh Larzabel Milby LHP 6'-0" 190

Announced in the fall:

Brandt Belk Houston Inf/OF 6'-2" 160
Mackenzie Mueller Abilene OF/LHP 6'-3" 205
Chase Sarchet Lubbock OF 6'-3" 210
Zach Wright Alvin RHP 6'-3" 180
Nick Silber Lawrenceville NY RHP 6'-4" 195
Mathew Canterino. Southlake RHP 6'-2" 205

LaFond committed in 2014 and from what I can find he had TJS last year and is just now back to playing.

Do the same new rules apply to baseball that apply to football?

I read that (football) coaches can now text players as much as they want. I think it would be hilarious if the OG was out there sending texts.07-coffee3

Isn't Trei Cruz still a junior? He might be a 2018 recruit.

Oops! It said graduates in 2017. So you're correct he's a 2018 recruit.

I also completely missed the early signing release on the rice website which lists most of these guys. http://www.riceowls.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/112415aab.html

Still wondering if we add any this spring.

It's pretty interesting when you read our press release how great it makes our recruiting class sound with honors... But when you compare it to the All-Texas Region teams from perfect game we only have one first team commit (Canterino). Once you get down to 3rd team you're looking at commits to Incarnate Word, etc...

Compare that 1st team for UT (9), A&M (7), Texas Tech (7), TCU (4), Arkansas (2), OSU (2), UH (2) and you can see our recruiting problem. I'm not sure if we've ever matched UT and A&M for top line recruits but someone like Walt would probably remember the early 2000s rankings.

Worth pointing out that traditionally, the larger public schools lose more recruits to the draft than Rice does. It feels like Rice has been surprised by losing a few recruits to MLB in the last ~5 years that maybe we weren't losing prior to that. I could be wrong, that is just anectdotal on my part. Also, lots of different reasons that might be happening more, not just a reflection of Rice.

I am not too surprised since Graham is in his last years at Rice.

I will get to watch Sean Reynolds at RUHS Little League night Friday (hopefully pitching)

Here's a power bat (JUCO transfer from Weatherford College) who could help our lineup next year...

...as an OFer, I'm presuming he'll be competing with Wunderlich for the LF spot (with Tristan Gray returning to the infield at either 2B or 1B).

He could also DH. Not like we have a power bat in the DH spot now unless Dunlap is going to play regularly.

LL night postponed until a week from Friday. RUHS lost their first game of the season over the weekend, dropping them to #6 in the LA Times poll.

Assuming Andrew comes back, I can see him being our everyday DH next season, since DiCaprio will almost certainly be our everyday catcher. Another intriguing option would be to see if we can convert him to 1B. Afterall, he was a catcher in high school.

Not that I am as close to the the team as others, but having witnessed Dunlap's defense firsthand in a few scrimmages, I am confident saying that he is essentially a DH only. I imagine others either share the same sentiment or have a better idea of the extent of his defensive abilities.

Then again, if he becomes a more complete hitter, with his power we would have to find a way to keep him in the lineup.

On a side note, why Andrew would he not be back?

As I said, the logical choice would be for Tristan to move to 1B, with Jefferies at 2B (?), though that would be wasting Tristan's plus arm.

Do we have any big hitters coming in? Ideally a JUCO guy who can contribute immediately?

Did you even bother to read the above post and article which highlights an incoming transfer from Weatherford College. Power-hitting OFer.

Chace Sarchet fits that bill. Set Weatherford JUCO's RBI record a year ago with 68. See below for article that was posted earlier. Has 10 HRs and 48 RBIs thus far.

Although, Brian Smith was another big (6'3, 230) outfielder from a JUCO who barely contributed during his two years here. But there have been JUCO guys like Jared Gayhart who were also great bats for us. So goes both ways, like with everything else.

Anyone know who his mom is? She's the sister of Will Flemons who played basketball at Texas Tech (was a decent player), and I vaguely recall he had a sister who was a decent basketball player at Tech as well.

While Brian Smith never panned out, Kirby Taylor became a very productive hitter for us his second year on the team. As for Gayhart, he was a bit of a special case, as we recruited him, but had no spot for him out of high school (with Dodson, Luna, Henley, etc.) already everyday starters. We suggested he go to San Jac for a year or two until we had an opening.
