Grading the Flames after 4 games - NewTimes - 09-24-2016 08:56 PM

Defense - C
Offense - F
QB - F
Running backs - C-
Coaching - F-

That's a coaching F minus, and if there was a lower rating I would have used it.

Ok, I admit I am really peeved, especially after the Jax St. game. Gill is lost with how to correct the QB problem. The QB's are lost. At one time the Flames were 0-11 in 3rd down conversions. Until the 59 yard TD in the 3rd quarter, total yards were less than 65. That's total yards. At halftime, "0" yards rushing. That's zero, nil, nada, yards rushing.

It's a team without leadership and extremely poor coaching. One is best judged when the chips are down. Well, the chips are about as low as they can be. And how is it going to be corrected. This was a laughter loss and a big downturn for the program.

LU played much better against VT and even SMU both road games. And to lose like this, at home to a FCS team is weak. Very weak. Hats off to Jax State. They are a very good team and well deserving of their rating. Good all round play. Especially their coaching. Something missing big time at LU.

If Gill cannot right the ship, then LU needs to get someone who can. I've lost a lot of respect for Gill. When the whole team, in most all parts, plays bad, it's mostly coaching. This sucks.

Worst game Gill has coached since being at Liberty. I can't disagree with your assessment. The play calling was just atrocious. Why we continued to try and run it up the middle on a couple of SEC caliber tackles. The while Jacksonville state defense is solid. We never brought a man in motion for a sweep or to try and get to the corner.
This was an embarrassing loss. I figured we would lose because JSU is better than we are, but to get blown out is bad and makes me question Gill's coaching ability.

I've have watched LU football since there was LU football. This is the worst. A lost team. Embarrassing loss that diminished any credibility of LU even remotely being FBS ready. LU program may be more ready but the coaching is not.

RE: Grading the Flames after 4 games - GE and MTS - 09-24-2016 10:41 PM

Good news! We can still make the playoffs by winning the Big South. However, that looks like a pipe dream at the moment as we suck something awful. Thanks for pointing out the stats NewTimes. I was going to mention them and the only thing I'll mention is that we were AHEAD in time of position for much of the game. Our defense was butter and their offense was a hot knife.

Why our offense can't do anything, I'm not sure. Gill was a quarterback, offense should be his specialty right? Gill was better with Rocco's players BUT he's been recruiting better players (ranked before coming to Liberty) than Rocco did.

Big picture: We faced an ACC team, AAC team, and a top 5 FCS team who just lost the national championship last year. We weren't favored in any of those games and it would have been a major upset to have won any of them with a mild exception of JSU due to being FCS and at home. But not just losing to each but losing poorly is painful. It's great going up against a tough schedule because it lets you see how you stack up against top foes. We don't stack up well. We probably lose to Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina at least. Gill's seat should be scorching hot and I am afraid we've plateaued under him and are only getting worse.

It's no fun when both your offense and defense are playing poorly. We have played some stiff competition. Winning out the season is obviously a must. Well, not neccessarily. Getting a couple wins under our belt will help things. The problem is, we've looked bad on both sides of the ball. Who knows how we'll play once we get in conference. I remain hopeful.

It's not like we are that good. We are a good mid level FCS team but a top 25 we are not. What are people expecting?

Maybe 30% conversion on 3rd downs
Structure, leadership and a plan to support and develop a QB 4 games into the season
Flexibility to use the running backs that are productive
Less predictable offense

Jax St. let off the gas. They could have scored more. Their QB is a high quality talent. The ease he played with was graceful. A very skillful player. Something mostly the LU coaches and players could learn from and implement with the team. I place most of the responsibility on this debacle on the coaching. Granted JS had a superior QB, running back, defense and coaching. One has give them all the credit. They took it to LU.

I am expecting a playoff-caliber team. I am expecting a top 25 team. Danny Rocco was here six years and his last four years ended with ranked teams. Gill has yet to finish ranked, though he did get us to the playoffs and won a playoff game. Other than that he's been middling which is unacceptable for a program labeling itself as "FBS ready" and trying to move up. Rocco did well despite Coastal Carolina and Stony Brook in the conference. What's Gill's excuse now?

LSU just fired Les Miles. Some teams won't settle for mediocrity.

LU should contact Les and offer him a fat check. Maybe that would get him to go FCS.

I would hardly call LSU mediocre. They are a very successful football team. They were crazy to let go of such a good coach. I hope their decision doesn't backfire. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. What kind of coach wants to go to a school and know your job is in jeapordy if you don't make the Conference Championship every year?

Its crazy like UGa letting go if their successful coach last year.
