I'd kick em off the team for being total dumb asses. I think they should be kicked out of China, but also plead no contest in an agreement for a suspended sentence and in lieu of serving that, a ban from entering China again for say 7 to 10 years. Also UCLA should have to pay the damages. What we often forget is >99% of all the stupid crimes committed by Americans overseas are just as illegal here in the US and just as subject to punishment. (What happens in their jails ... well what happens in our jails isn't pretty either.) I think it should go on their record in the U.S. perhaps serving probation here. What complicates such an easy settlement is that the US and China lack an extradition treaty. In no small part because simply being a dissident (especially Uigher, Tibetan, Fulanist, or being related to a Chinese who is politically targeted) the declare criminal or even terrorist. It is suspected they have even kidnapped and repatriated US citizens of Chinese birth (my wife, who has not been a Chinese citizen for 20+ years could get pulled back). So if the Chinese decide to make a show of this, it can get very sticky. I think I only watch because of Tulane. If it wasn't for them, I would probably have tuned it out years ago. It's beyond disgusting, it's actually surreal at this point. This is what happens when you worship athletic kids. How difficult is it to NOT shop lift while in a foreign country? Doesn't take a "ridiculous standard" to avoid doing that, eh? They should be sent back the US immediately where they should be charged for the crime. I'm no lawyer and I have little experience with shop lifting. But I don't think we send people to jail for 3 years for minor crimes do we? It's sad that probably nobody has educated them about other countries laws and government systems....especially Communists and Dictatorships. There are dozens of cases like this where US citizens do stupid stuff and suffer under the judicial system of countries like China, Singapore, Middle East and other Asian countries. Just because they are basketball players and some from well off families won't make it easier like here in the US. I guessing they appreciate the US even more now.
