TCU announces additional Amon Carter Stadium Renovations - tcufrog86 - 11-14-2017 05:17 PM

As the next step to the complete Amon Carter Stadium renovation/rebuild that occured right before TCU entered the Big 12, TCU has announced additional premium seating for the east side of the stadium.
$100M project slated to open for the 2019 season will include about 1,000 new club seats, 20 new suites, and a new video board in the north end zone.

Word is, some of the money will go to install inflatable fans in case stuff what's captured below ever happens again.

I kid, I kid. I remember when the first part of the reno was announced. If that wasn't a red flag there was something big about to happen, I don't know what would be. That money didn't show up because of a Mountain West or Big East schedule. Once there was word the Longhorns and Sooners would be on the yearly slate, I bet this massive project became a very easy lift.

Having been on both sides of the fence here and attended games at TCU and A&M, yes it's true that TCU does not have the FB culture of die hard fans who show up early and stay the whole game no matter what like you tend to see at bigger state FB schools. It very much is more about the tailgate and after party there.
BUT while TCU doesn't have a ton of die hard fans/students compared to the big state schools, what it DOES have is one of the most competent HCs and staff in the game today which is why they win.
And if we're all honest, we'd all take the wins over a packed house in the 4th quarter of a game against Kansas

Not really....premium seating is very much in demand across college football these days. TCU is pushing this project because we have a wait list for existing club seats and suites.

Yeah specialty seating is where the money is for us. Not going to have a big bowl of 100K people, but a model of 40K close to the action fans with a bunch of premium seating dollars is workable. Good revenue stream and good environment/ beautiful facility.

BTW... TCU is one of my favourite venues to watch a game. However most rational decision makers wouldn't spend this type of money on something used about 10 times a year. I

It doesn't sound like this is adding much more than a couple thousand actual new seats so it won't increase the capacity of AGC by much at all.
This is purely about quality, not quantity

TCU has the lowest athletics debt service in the Big 12 @ about 3.5 million per year slightly below Kansas so they will be just fine spending on this

No increased by about a 1000 club seats. No lost seats. So I guess the new capacity will be 46,000 plus whatever they count the suites as having.
I get the negativity about the college sports facilities arms race, but it is what it is. We've been aggressive in the arms race well before the move to the Big 12 and whether it is luck or planning, we've definitely reaped benefits not just in athletics but the whole school. Applications are up, we are experiencing success in the big 3 sports (Football, baseball and now basketball). And the general consensus it that it is because of the "if you build it, they will come" vision the school has embraced.

Amazing what you can do when you make the P5 club and get P5 money to throw around. Congratulations though TCU - you played and earned your way into the B-12 on the field and politically by moving around from conference to conference as your on field product improved.

I suppose it could work well at a place like TCU with a smaller (but presumably wealthier) fanbase.

They will also use the club for more than just football games. Like the one on the west side. They use it for meetings, alumni dinners, wedding receptions, etc. One positive note is that it will provide some shade to the east side, but unfortunately not enough. We use to never have day games in September and early October until the new TV contract went in effect. The poor people on the east side are broiling during those games when it is 95+. So at least the people on the top 8-10 rows are going to get some shade.
If this project wasn't already close to being fully funded, they would not have announced a ground breaking for next spring.
