OT Carolina Panthers to be sold - THE NC Herd Fan - 12-17-2017 09:10 PM

The recent breaking scandal has led Richardson to put the Carolina Panthers up for sell. The big question, IF the Panthers are sold will they stay in Charlotte? Bank of America stadium is one of the oldest in the NFL. Given the desire to have Billion Dollar stadiums with high tech amenities well a new owner demand a new stadium under threat to move? Charlotte let the Hornets leave under similar threat. I've always thought the Panthers are risk to move under new ownership.

Nowhere better to put a team at this point.

8th biggest state in country. 5th or 6th largest distribution in nfl. Wealthy city. 156 straight sellouts.

Would be the worst business decision of the 21st century to move the team.

Besides, Richardson only owes 48% of the team. He's selling his part of the team. There are a lot of.other owners with deep ties to the Carolinas that own the other 52%

I seriously doubt they get moved out of Charlotte.

This sounds all kinds of bad PR for him and any collateral damage that might come out of it.

Unless it's to Vegas.

Just watched Florida Panthers play at Las Vegas. Some Las Vegas casino industry guy came on and stated how hockey betting almost doubled since Las vegas Golden Knights started playing this year. NHL hockey in Vegas is, apparently, good for business. NFL in Vegas would be great!

The Raiders agree. They move there in 2020.

If they move, it'll be to either Boone or Cullowhee... 05-stirthepot

LA Chargers proved that the NFL isn't thinking clearly.

Perhaps instead of the speculated London Jaguars, we get the London Panthers?

RE: OT Carolina Panthers to be sold - 49RFootballNow - 12-18-2017 09:22 AM

Is there some reason the Panther's should move? Just 4 years ago BoA underwent an $87 renovation. Every game is a sellout. I don't see the NFL picking an ownership group who would move a successful team to another market.

Actually the Cowboys are looking at moving to Cullowhee. Jerry Jones bought some property up in Cashiers, and thinks the Cullowhee Cowboys has a nice ring to it.. 04-cheers

One would think that with the growth being experienced in and along the 85 corridor, the team will not be moved anywhere. Maybe 15 or 20 years ago there is consideration, but the Panthers fill an East coast gap between the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions.

If they move....the NFL is dead to me

Not likely. There are better candidates for that role; like the Seattle Seahawks who already are located in BFE.

If not mistaken, under Nevada gaming laws you can not bet in Nevada on a Nevada based team. That would mean no betting on UNLV. Nevada or the NHL team. They can bet on NHL. Note, he said that betting on HOCKEY is up. I doubt that putting a team there moves the needle much since there is already so much betting on the NFL.

The Panthers have ranked in the top 10 in attendance every year since 1996 when they began playing in their own stadium in Charlotte, as their debut season in 1995 was played in Clemson. Also the NFC South is regarded as one of the best divisions in pro football with this nugget:

The NFC South is the only division since the 2002 realignment when the NFC South was formed, to have each of its teams make the NFC championship game appearance as well as a Super Bowl appearance: Tampa Bay (2002), Atlanta (2004, 2012, and 2016), Carolina (2003, 2005 and 2015), and New Orleans (2006 and 2009). Also since 2002, each team has won at least three division titles, the only such division in the league.

The NFL is not going to screw this up, thus the Panthers are not going anywhere!

I would look for the new owner to potentially come from one of Charlotte's deep pockets.

Burton Smith - Owner of Speedway Motorsports (Charlotte, Atlanta, and Texas tracks to name a few)

Rick Hendrick - Hendrick Motorsports and Hendrick Automotive Group

Johnny Harris - Property Developer - Quail Hollow Golf Club, Ballantyne, etc.

RE: OT Carolina Panthers to be sold - wh49er - 12-18-2017 04:21 PM

No competent business person is moving this team:

- You would have to create a new fanbase from scratch (Merchandise sales would plummet)
- Team sells 60K season tickets (PSLs) every year win or lose
- Charlotte is the 17th largest market in the US
- The city has shown itself to be extremely NFL friendly

London is a pipe dream for the NFL, the 4 games now are perfect for the NFL.

i think it can be done. If it were the Jaguars, let them swap divisions with the Dolphins. That way half of the schedule is about as close as you can get it with the Patriots, Bills, and Jets.

RE: OT Carolina Panthers to be sold - THE NC Herd Fan - 12-18-2017 07:31 PM

Not saying they will move, but Richardson did make the threat to get the city to chip in on the renovation. I could see the new majority owner making a similar threat to get a new stadium. Atlanta's stadium was newer than BofA Stadium, owners are all about the monuments to the NFL, a new domed stadium would be a candidate for the Super Bowl, BofA Stadium will never be on the list to host. The only question would be if the city of Charlotte says no to paying for new stadium, which I hope they would, a new owner might pack the Panthers up, not likely a good business decision but it looks like the Chargers move to LA ain't going to be a grand slam either.

why should he sell? he is only 49% owner....allegations(probably true based on payoffs), but why sell?

Who knows? After his sons nearly ran the team into the ground he made the decision he doesn't want the team to be taken over by them when he dies. His will says the team must be sold within 2 years of his death, maybe his health is in decline, plus the allegations could damage the value of the team if he remains in the ownership group.

RE: OT Carolina Panthers to be sold - ghostofclt - 12-18-2017 09:50 PM

clt says expect the new owner to get a new stadium, and a MLS franchise in Charlotte as well.
