Many Coaching Changes at UTSA - Volkmar - 12-27-2017 07:15 PM

- Defensive Coordinator Pete Golding was poached by Alabama (Our defense was 7th in FBS in fewest yards per game, 8th in scoring, 2nd in first downs, and 19th in pass efficiency).
- Offensive Line Coach Ryan Pugh was poached by BYU
- Tight Ends Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Ricky Brumfeld was poached by Virginia (Our special teams were #35 in the nation in net punting and #6 in punt return defense)
- Safeties Coach Patrick Toney was hired as an assistant at ULL
- We fired our Offensive Coordinator Frank Scelfo

We've only hired one replacement so far, as we promoted Associate Coach and Defensive Backs Coach Jason Rollins from within to Defensive Coordinator.

Hope we'll make the right moves in the off-season, as I really don't feel we've been able to get the most out of our talent so far, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Also hope we don't suck again next season. But if we do, at least our football program has a 100% graduation rate again this year...lol. Second time for that in the last 3 years btw.

Fellow 'Runner supporters, let me know if I missed anything...

why did the safeties coach go to ULL? more cash/responsibilities?

the other coaches leaving makes sense...especially your oc and dc...not said to see your dc go...now your oc...damnit!

Yeah, I think an "assistant coach" position is a promotion from a mere position coach. So there's probably more money involved also. I'm no expert on this stuff though, so don't take my word for it. lol

Gotta be the money.

Quote:According to reports, Napier's contract will be $1.47 million per year for five years and includes a $2 million pool for assistant coaches.

If true, a $2 million pool for assistant coaches puts Laffy in the top 5 of the G5's with Boise State and several AAC schools.

when your coach leaves for p5, he was poached. when your coach leaves for G5, he was hired...its the small things that make being a fan great. 03-cloud9

Could have been worse. Bo Davis would have been gone as well if he didn't have that recruiting violation from Alabama still following him around. He is a really great DL coach.

All in all, it is a part of college football. Rollins is in a very good spot as UTSA's new DC after Golding left. The defense will still be the best part of this team in 2018.

LOL, nice catch.

Had an uncle once who was a parole officer. A worried mother told him one day that Germaine was running with a group of kids who were stealing things. Now, she said, he's starting to take things too.

Yeah, you guys read a little too much into that though. I really just got tired of writing "poached" and wanted to change it up a bit. The P5/G5 thing really didn't play a part in which term I used.
