Was Your Coach Worth His Paycheck? - Side Show Joe - 12-30-2017 12:40 PM

Based on the base 2017 salaries posted by USA Today (numbers are slightly off based on earned incentives), this is where each coach ranks based on coat per win. Which coaches are worth the money, which need raises, and which should go the way of Bailiff and Kugler?

1. Southern Miss- Hopson ($62,500 per win) 8 wins (total contract $500,000)
2. UAB- Clark ($78,750 per win) 8 wins (total contract $630,000)
3. FAU- Kiffin ($86,363 per win) 11 wins (total contract $950,000)
4. Marshall- Holiday ($95,321 per win) 8 wins (total contract $762,570)
5. LA Tech- Holts ($100,000 per win) 7 wins (total contract $700,000)
6. North Texas- Littrell ($110,157 per win) 9 wins (total contract $991,416)
7. FIU- Davis ($112,500 per win) 8 wins (total contract $900,000)
8. Middle Tenn- Stockstill ($114,500 per win) 7 wins (total contract $801,504)
9. ODU- Wilder ($130,000 per win) 5 wins (total contract $650,000)
10. WKU- Stanford ($133,334 per win) 6 wins (total contract $800,000)
11. UTSA- Wilson ($189,583 per win) 6 wins (total contract $1,137,500)
12. UTEP- Kugler ($515,322 for nothing) 0 wins (total contract $515,322) Fired after 5 games
13. Charlotte- Lambert ($625,000 per win) 1 win (total contract $625,000)
14. Rice- Bailiff ($772,883 per win) 1 win (total contract $772,883) Fired at the end of the season

Lambert must be a great coach, he makes the same per win as Saban.

RE: Was Your Coach Worth His Paycheck? - banker - 12-30-2017 12:46 PM

Makes me think that all coaches should have performance based contracts where they get a set amount per win with different amounts only being based on competition level (less for a FCS win, more for a win against a "premium" opponent).

No, but we still love him. He's a good man and good recruiter. We're excited to see what a new staff can do with the talent.

Probably the first and last time I will ever hear Lambert compared to Saban. 03-lmfao Yeah, he should've been fired.....everyone knows it but our AD.

I'm hearing bad things about Camp the new LB coach Wilson hired. Some that coached with him feel he was less then professional.

I know nothing about coach Camp but I'm sure your UNT brethren are having a field day with that little rumor.

Apparently one of our Mean Green fans is a coach and was on the same staff with him a few years back. I've never known this fan to make stuff up, so I think his word is good.

Ours wasn't. We will see if he can recruit well enough to mask his coaching. I am betting he can't.

What grade would you give Stanford and what is the most important issue he needs to fix in the off season?

I think the Sanford haters are jumping to conclusions after just ONE season.I have no facts to support my opinion--just a calendar.

What does a calendar do to help your opinion?

Here's a conclusion for you and it's based off facts..first losing season since 2010. Worse/easiest schedule Western has played since moving up. Got worse the more games played. Got out coached in most if not all after halftime. Went from having a 1000 yard rusher in every season since 2009 (over 1500 yard in all but 1 maybe 2) to not being able to get 1000 total yards as a team.

But hey you got a calendar what ever in the hell that means

Worth every penny. I see a couple other schools got some cheap bargains. We'll be paying a lot more going forward.

I agree with the grade given but there’s no way he throws away the money that Todd Stewart threw at him.

I’d like to see him get rid of the following and replace them:

OC - Junior was the most predictable play caller since Jimmy Feix. Hard to believe he ever played the wide receiver position in college. Or....he’s scared to death of Sanford and calls what Sanford wants called.

O-Line Coach - I feel terrible for what he and his family have gone through. Probably best for all concerned if he goes back home to Ohio. Never should have been hired out of D3. I still don’t remember Western ever snatching a guy from D3 since we’ve been FBS

Special Teams Coordinator - Pops needs to go. Special teams got worse all year long. Was terrible by the end of the year. Was bad from the get go. The excuse makers tried to use injuries but that doesn’t explain kick team coverage.

Strength and Conditioning - More injuries than under any coach I remember. Went from a great one to one that obviously doesn’t know what he’s doing

To be honest I’d like to see the Dee Coordinator gone too. But no way he gets rid of both coordinators. The defense was getting GASHED the last 4 or 5 games. Couldn’t stop anybody.

I don't think he quits. Hell dreamer boy doesn't believe he's the problem...at all. It's always the players fault.

Marshall replaced their O-Line coach this year and went from 23 sacks and not opening up holes to I believe 11 and a good running game. Doc called him the best O-line coach he every coached with. BTW Marshall had 3 and maybe 4 new starters on the O-Line. Three of them R-freshen or So.

COACH MATTERS....

a great staff can limit the mistakes of a dreamer first time head coach. If he listens to his coaches. Not for a minute do I think anyone on this staff fits that role. I believe Sanford wanted a staff full of yes men and that's what he went out and got. I read a quote that his main thing for asst coaches were great recruiters.

Speaking of recruiting...the highest recruits that committed to Western did not sign. A total of 8(out of 19)three star players did not sign early. So with that it should tell everyone they are still wanting/hoping for another offer.

11 three stars signed 8 did not and I believe that is the highest unsigned in CUSA

You know how I feel about star ratings so it doesn't make a big difference to me. But these others that want to look at this recruiting class like it's some how a difference maker. It's fools gold. Hell we have fans looking at last years class and pointing to that....

in that 2017 class that is actually counted in the 2017 ranking the highest rated player did not sign with Western. And one other 3 star. But both is listed in the rating
B.J. Sharpe SDE 3 star .846 commits to Western Kentucky ON 11/12/2016
Paul Taylor WDE 3 star .802 commits to Western Kentucky ON 08/09/2016

I wont be surprised if no changes are made but personally I'm with you that both OC's need replaced along with Sr and the O-line and Strength and Conditioning...

the last two seasons Western's players got stronger as the season played out. This past one...either no heart or they got weaker

Even the greatest recruiting won't mask luck of wins. Before Lane, we had Charlie, who was a great recruiter. He also went 9-27 in three seasons.

classes built on 3 star players is not going to put a school head and shoulders better than most in that conference. We are not talking Bama talent vs Vandy talent here or even Kansas talent. In those cases talent might win out even with bad coaching.

But in CUSA we are talking about a team getting a few more 3 star players and mostly lower 3 stars. So all of this talk from Western fans about great recruiting class...MEANS NOTHING. Right now it's borderline 5th

Going by 24/7 FIU is 1st and Western 2nd, with Tech and UTSA 3rd and 4th. But if you look closer after the signing period it's not even that order. Lets be clear here..if a kid didn't sign early, they are still looking or hoping to find another school.

Western had the lowest % of 3 stars to not sign in the early signing period. I personally think it's better to rate a known than something that might not happen.

Below are the top 5 classes for CUSA in recruiting...24/7 ranking used

School class size............SIGNED.....................UNSIGNED
FIU -20...................17(2-4* 12-3* 2-2*).........3 (1-3*,2-2*)
WKU -24.................13(11-3*, 2-2*)................11(8-3*, 3-2*)
Tech -16.................14 (11-3*, 2-2*)...............3 (1-3*, 2-2*)
UTSA-19.................19 (13-3*, 6-2*)................ 0
USM -19.................14 (9-3*, 5-2*).................. 5 (3-3*, 2-2*)

Going by signed players I would put it FIU, USTA, TECH, WKU, USM

Going by what Western saw this year it will take a lot more talented players to keep Western from losing 8 or more games next year.

Wisconsin will name the score....by halftime
Louisville will name the score....by halftime
Took a come from behind to beat Ball St at home with a good QB...40-60% LOSS
Maine 75% WIN

Reverse 2017 schedule

@Tech 90% loss
UTEP 50-50%
@UNCC 50-50%
ODU 60-40%
@FAU 5%
Marshall 40-60% new OC if they can actual score. If their offense improves 25-75%
@Middle 25% just because this game is usually close
FIU 60-40%

If I had to bet right now I would go with
FCS-W
UNCC-W
2 -W out of Ball St, UTEP, ODU and FIU

Best case 5-7 and wouldn't be shocked with 3-9

RE: Was Your Coach Worth His Paycheck? - TOPSTRAIGHT - 12-31-2017 02:56 AM

I guess the calendar reference was too basic. Only been ONE year. That is also a fact.People can improve and learn from failure.Maybe he does.Maybe he does not.If he fails to improve the AD will do the right thing. C-/D+ grade for the first year coach.

I give Litrell an A-.

The team over preformed this season. No one saw us winning the Western Division. But most of that success was a direct result of our offense. Our defense isn't good and although our recruiting is improving, we are not yet among the top in C-USA, so there is plenty of room to get better. But, all things considered... aside from the blow out losses to FAU, I'm very pleased with his second season against C-USA competition.
