2018: Football recruiting updates before National Signing Day on 2/7 - thefaU - 01-07-2018 10:45 PM

We're officially a month away from National Signing Day on Wednesday, February 7th and I thought we needed a thread to post recruiting updates and roster news until then. I don't follow every program in CUSA that closely, so I was hoping others would post any updates for their respective programs. I've started with updates for Florida Atlantic.

Florida Atlantic's recruiting updates:
> Carson Lydon (Class of ’17), 3* OLB, Los Angeles Valley College (Van Nuys, CA) and played his freshman year at Virginia Tech will start classes on 1/8.
> Taylor Crabtree, P/K, East Mississippi C.C. (Scooba, MS) will join as a preferred walk-on and start classes on 1/8.
> Jaylen Joyner, 3* WDE, Jones (Orlando, FL) will visit on 1/12. He has 26 offers which include Virginia Tech, NC State, South Carolina, and Wake Forest. Florida Atlantic is currently listed as his favorite.

Florida Atlantic's roster news:
> Chris Robison, 4* QB, Oklahoma transfer (Mesquite, TX) will be eligible to play in 2018.
> Jovon Durante, 4* WR, West Virginia transfer (Miami, FL) will be eligible to play in 2018.
> De’Andre Johnson, 3* QB, East Mississippi C.C. (Scooba, MS) is expected to compete for the starting QB position next season after undergoing surgery.
> Daniel Parr, 3* QB, Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) is transferring to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA.
> Jason Driskel, 3* QB, Hagerty (Oviedo, FL) is graduating this spring and there is talk he may not return for his final year of eligibility.

Florida Atlantic's 2018 recruiting class (as of 12/20):
> Nero Nelson, 3* WR, Copiah-Lincoln C.C. (Wesson, MS)
> Charles Cameron, 3* DT, Copiah-Lincoln C.C. (Wesson, MS) will start classes on 1/8.
> Devin Hayes, 3* SDE, Jones (Orlando, FL)
> Franklin Jackson, 3* WDE, West Orange (Winter Garden, FL)
> Desean Holmes, 2* WR, Bishop Alemany (Pasadena, CA) who was originally a commit for Kiffin at USC in 2014.

Good idea for a thread. I notice FAUs class is heavy on transfers and jucos which is fine for the short term but not necessarily good for building a program. I realize Brohm had great success with it at WKU, but once the coach is no longer there sustainability is difficult. As long as Kiffin is there you are in good shape, for the sake of your program and the conference we certainly hope he stays. Congrats on a great season.

Wasn't that a part of the problem for USM when Fedora left? I know EJ was an awful hire but (from what I remember) the cupboard was pretty bare and that delayed the rebuild when Monken was hired.

Is Driskel planning on transferring or is he calling it quits? Kinda silly, if you ask me - he was a starter for the entire 10-game winning streak and has a year of eligibility. I don't think he can make it in the NFL.

The word is he might have had enough with football. Since he will be graduating in the spring, it seems he's ready to move on. I'll keep you updated if I hear anything more conclusive.

There was no problem when Fedora left. 5 guys from a 0-12 team played in the NFL. Daddy football was the problem

RE: 2018: Football recruiting updates before National Signing Day on 2/7 - Eagle9 - 01-08-2018 11:11 PM

There was a little bit of a talent problem after Fedora left. A lot of it was EJ, but some of it was Fedoras last couple recruiting classes not producing much. Yes we had a few guys from the 2012 team make it in the NFL for a while, but some of those were young, and the 2012 team didn’t have much depth with talent and no QB.

RE: 2018: Football recruiting updates before National Signing Day on 2/7 - winston70 - 01-08-2018 11:31 PM

We got most of our targets during the early singing period and I'm surprised we are 3rd in the conference with such a small class

RE: 2018: Football recruiting updates before National Signing Day on 2/7 - Fort Bend Owl - 01-09-2018 08:00 AM

We haven't had much good news emerge since the hiring of our new coach to be honest. But we have had bad news, such as the news over the weekend that Calvin Anderson (our best returning OL) is graduating and will transfer for his final year to somewhere else. Supposedly he may end up at Texas which would surprise me (he's a big guy and has had tons of potential but I haven't seen the ability from him that would make me think he could start at UT).

If you think Fedora left the cupboard bare, you're clueless.

Based on the current rankings several of the teams with less than 20 recruits should be moving up with the final signing day in February.

RE: 2018: Football recruiting updates before National Signing Day on 2/7 - MinerInWisconsin - 01-09-2018 12:30 PM

This weekend is important for UTEP in particular since we need speed at wr and a dual threat qb. January 12-15 is the mid-year signing period for JC transfers so I'm hoping to see at least a qb and a wr or 2.

So far in the past week UTEP received a commit from a JC LB and a K State DE grad transfer.

Correct. LA Tech has already signed 14 of its' 17 targets for the class of 2018, and I believe only 2 are Juco's, both LB's. Ironically, the 3 guys left unsigned are all RB's. Of the 3 remaining, I would prefer to sign Elijah Hines.

Gotta love picking up those dismissed SEC players. The SEC is known for having the highest morals in the land.

03-shhhh

Lane already got an NCAA violation for trying to "recruit" Lamar Jackson on Twitter, so I don't know what you're talking about. 03-wink

But in all seriousness, with most of these P5 transfers that Lane is bringing to Boca, I hope they take advantage of this second chance. #LastStrikeU
