There's a reason that they had to pass laws stating that, while you could be naked in san fransicso, you couldnt sit your naked ass in a booth at a restaurant. If you are confused about whether to stand or squat to pee, you are probably not really up on basic body hygiene.

There's apparently a LOT more demand for housing in SFO than in Hattiesburg. That's my point. The fact that a house in Hattiesburg is 1/20th of the price of a similar home in SFO is a real measure of the relative value that people place on each community.
How many tourists visited SFO last year? How many visited the entire state of Mississippi? 18.9 leisure travelers and 5.8 million business travelers went to SFO last year. Which is more than the entire state of Mississippi. Mississippi's tourists spent 6.25 billion. In SFO that number was 8.5 billion. And San Francisco's figures are just for the city of San Francisco, which has a one third of the population of Mississippi.
Its obscenely expensive, and yet, business still locates there. One would think that if SFO was such a "shithole", that people would be moving their businesses to Hattiesburg en masse from SFO. That isn't happening to any significant degree and part of the reason is that people who live in SFO don't feel welcome in Hattiesburg. And quite frankly, given the behavior of Sheriff Billy McGee, would have ample reason to be frightened of being there. And then there's HB 1523.
BTW, I'm not a fan of SFO. Its stoopid expensive there and I feel like a Conservative there. The weather blows chunks too. I have a secret hotel there. Its decent, clean, close to transport, not ridiculously priced, and usually available. It is, however, near city hall, and involves literally stepping over people sleeping on the sidewalks to get to. But I'd live there over Hattiesburg. So would a lot of people.
If you can find a decent paying job in Hattiesburg and are conservative enough to be able to live there, then I suppose its great for y'all. Most people see the **** on the ground in SFO and still choose to remain. And for whatever reason, businesses find it difficult to move to places like Hattiesburg, mainly because the people they feel necessary to sustain their businesses are reluctant to move there. And for all of its faults, of which there are many, SFO excels at creating new businesses that grow, thrive and stay in the area.
BTW, one of Harvey Milk's best trolljobs ever involved the amount of **** on the streets in SFO.

Business does not relocate to SF. The talent, money and start ups are there. When they hit big often back office operations go elsewhere. Gulf Coast of MS, Bama and Fl., is vastly underrated. More touristy and retirement oriented, not including military.
SF has spotty weather, can be overcast and chilly, 5 miles away, sunny and 71.

The problem in SF is that it is so freaking expensive. The costs rival NYC.
I actually like depressed cities like Baltimore (where I live now). There is potential for something better AND the costs are a fraction of a place like SF.

I don't know how restaurant workers survive. I knew this girl from where I live, who moved out there 25 years ago. Flew there in 95' and hooked up with her. She was close to Nob Hill living in a closet. Walk in, bed on the left, tiny galley kitchen, little bathroom on the right, maybe 350 Sq. Ft. It was $800 a month back then.

it all depends on your distribution/mfg needs.....there's easily others that are more desirable depending on 'wants'
however, like north jxn, b'ham, nashville, etc......health care is top notch.....
toss in the weather, and it becomes value......
the midsouth is happening.....TN/AL is primed right now.....we're lagging a tad, but we kinda like it that way....
