OT: XFL making a return - usm99 - 01-25-2018 11:56 AM

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2018/01/25/reports-wwe-vince-mcmahon-start-professional-football-league-xfl/1065116001/

World Wrestling Entertainment announced that founder Vince McMahon will make "a major sports announcement" on Thursday, which will likely mark the return of the XFL.

ESPN reported that McMahon is attempting to start another professional football league, and CBS Sports reported that "the return of the XFL will be made official Thursday," adding that the league is not expected to start again until 2020.

McMahon is set to make the announcement at 3 p.m. ET

If McMahon wants to invest hundreds of millions into a losing football program, he should just donate it to his alma mater.

Sacrasm but watch this turn into a minor league of sorts for players who either don't want to go to college because of grades or because they just want to get paid.

Or he could buy the Panthers.

Only chance Vince has is to put it in the spring and early summer. Give people their football fix in between the Superbowl and the start of NFL camps. As long as Vince knows he can't go head to head with the shield and has tempered expectations for what the league can be, it has a chance to be successful.

Not for "hundreds of millions" he couldn't.

Vince is from the Carolinas. He only sold off roughly 10% of his WWE stock.

Look, the man is a billionaire. He may just be looking to become the principle investor.

It's gonna be the XFL announced.

Apparently some test streams of the feed has shown an XFL background.

I'd be surprised if Birmingham isn't one of the markets that will get an XFL team. Would present another use to the proposed downtown stadium.

I agree with others that the league needs to operate in the spring/summer to be successful.

I don't think the current "owner" even owns half of the team.

It would also be a great place for guys who were super popular in college that just didn't cut it in the NFL. People would still like to watch those guys play.

Just wonder if WKU alumni Rod "He Hate Me" Smart would return. 04-cheers

And the entire XFL will cost even less than half a stake in the Panthers.

Vince might have the money to buy the entirety of a NFL franchise and he probably has the money to buy a substantial majority share, but with regards to this story in particular, he sold off ~$100M for this venture, that won't get you more than a percentage point or two of a NFL franchise.

Beyond all that, I expect McMahon would be less welcomed by the NFL than Mark Cuban has been in his attempts to buy into MLB.

It would be very interesting, and I think easier this time around with all of the streaming services that are out there.

XFL might take our basketball slots for TV on Bein in 2020....

A 40-man roster makes me wonder if this isn't going to be 11-on-11. Perhaps 8-man or 6-man?

I agree.

Have this league from end of April to end of June and it will get viewers

College basketball over
Baseball just starting so no drama there
NBA Playoffs are the only competition

Hell, itd be great to sit by the pool with a cooler of beer and watch football.

There is an opening for it, but it has to be executed the right way. The NFL is a monster.

That being said, it also has its problems for sure. The games move excruciatingly slow, the replay system is ******* terrible, the commercial breaks are repetitive and long, the officiating sucks, the commissioner is unlikable, and viewership is down. No doubt the NFL is still huge and popular, but it certainly has issues.
