Arkansas played SMU every year in the 90’s with some games at Little Rock.

Texas and Texas A&M pretty much just kept Rice on the schedule here and there.

Baylor played the others the most.

Texas Tech had a few series with the others.

I read one article where I believe it was the A&M AD who said they’d never play the Dallas schools again. What’s the deal with Texas and Texas A&M swearing off SMU and TCU? In the immortal words of T Swift “baby we got bad blood.”
We play Texas every year in everything. We play A&M in baseball every year in the playoffs and eliminate them each time.

TCU played Texas in football in 2007. One time from 1995 to 2012. Or, until TCU joined the Big XII (because TAMU fled). So....

A&M hasnt played Houston since the end of the SWC. I think that could be a fun game for both and I think the local Ag fans would love it. Play the Houston game in NRG. Lots of Aggies in Houston that dont have season tickets and would be up for a one time special game in air conditioned NRG. But the game doesnt happen and its entirely because the Ag's have zero interest in the concept.

Yeah, it is bizarre that Texas and A&M have avoided some of their old conference mates for so long. They'll play Rice, but none of the others unless they have to, like TCU joining the Big XII.

*Would Herman schedule Houston?

Apparently not. We we were willing to waive the Herman buy out for a football series and were told no.

This is very common. E.g., here in Louisiana, LSU does their best to avoiding scheduling ULL, ULM, LA-Tech, none of the myriad FBS schools that are within easy driving distance.

For them, there's zero upside, only downside. Texas surely feels the same.

But Houston and TCU were former SWC members like Texas and A&M, unlike Louisiana Monroe and Louisiana Lafayette in relation to LSU. That was kind of a low blow to Houston, Quo.

Low blow...but true. We call it fear. They call it no upside. Basically, it’s different ways of saying the same thing—the all too real possibility of losing is driving the decision. I’ve always thought it would be a good move for the fans of teams like Texas and Aggie to play UH on a home and home (especially if the Houston games are played in NRG). Hopefully, we wouldn’t be dumb enough to say no this time around.

My guess is it only happens if state legislators get involved like they have is some other states. It would make sense for them to figure out how to use scheduling to remove some red ink from state universities.

LSU has played the three in-state schools three times each since 2000 in football and 11 times in men's basketball.

That's 20 more games than Arkansas has played against in-state in the same span.

Interestingly enough, Arkansas and Arkansas State have never played one another in football.

... and it should happen in Little Rock.

This is your downside of UH and Rice sharing the same city. UH gets the better conference affiliation because of your size. As long as Rice is willing to do two-for-ones and play at NRG, the others will schedule the Owls to play in front of Houston-area alumni and recruits.

We could work together . . .

RE: Interesting Info on Southwest Conference - billybobby777 - 02-12-2018 09:05 PM

Back on topic: After the SWC broke up, the original CUSA was set up with only 6 football playing members.
If I’m not mistaken Houston played all “power schools” in their OOC games. At first it worked as the Coogs made it to a bowl vs Syracuse (when there were very few bowls)
If I also remember correctly, the Coogs lost some very tight games vs SEC opponents in the beginning of CUSA. Either LSU, Bama or Auburn I can’t remember. I do recall CUSA doing much better than expected. ECU struggled out of the gate after finally getting the call 2 years after CUSA started.

RE: Interesting Info on Southwest Conference - C2__ - 02-12-2018 09:32 PM

They blew out LSU for three quarters before giving up 3 TD's in the fourth to just barely lose.

But they were blown out by a Mack Brown coached UNC team and USC.

Interesting Info on Southwest Conference - owl at the moon - 02-12-2018 09:52 PM

UH hosted UT at Robertson.
No problem, they’ll bring in extra bleachers. Sold a bunch of tickets to the Longhorn fans.
Fire marshall came in a week before the game and condemned the whole setup. Lots of UT fans and ticket holders didn’t get in to see the game that they had tickets for. That’s how I remember it went down.

RE: Interesting Info on Southwest Conference - C2__ - 02-13-2018 12:52 AM

It wasn't the fire marshall, it was a UH admin. The stands were cleared for use and had been used some recent sporting event.

RE: Interesting Info on Southwest Conference - esayem - 02-13-2018 10:33 AM

It's the shame the NCAA punishes teams and players that had nothing to do with past violations. Pardee's teams had nothing to play for (besides pride and general competitiveness of course) and were still outstanding. Or was it his successor? Anyway, I was reading about those Houston teams, and it's a cool story. Seems if it weren't for the ridiculous scholarship reduction, UH would have been too good to pass up by the Big 8.

Both, Pardee and John Jenkins coached on probation. The NCAA has gotten better about punishing the guilty over the innocent. Kelvin Sampson is an example of this.

Warming to C2, all schools in the SWC had warts, Rice flew under the radar because we were so bad. Going forward, Rice, UH, needs to join hands and build on the third most populous county in our nation. It deserve one or two college teams playing at the highest level!
