Request for Ideas for First Vacation After Retirement - Tiger1983 - 02-03-2018 09:14 AM

I plan to retire in 8 months (but who's counting, right?) and Mrs. Tiger1983 and I want to take a special vacation shortly after my last work day.

Suggestions?

Hawaii, unless you have been.

New York City, unless you hate crowds.

Washington DC, unless you don't lke history.

Since I'm in the world's largest travel club I've got a lot of ideas, but this really depends on what you like. Do you want to see museums and historic places? Lie on a beach? Climb mountains? There's so much to do it's hard to pin it all down without some sort of directions.

I prefer cities, museums, and historic places. I want to stay in the USA for the first trip. I've visited Boston, Washington DC, San Fran, NYC, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Seattle, Denver, and Atlanta in the past, but hope for a new place to see.

Good suggestions. I’ve been to Charleston many times, but not Virginia.

Civil War White House in Richmond. Jamestowne, Williamsburg not too far away. Can't get much more history than in that area.

Charleston is a great place to visit. I am ready to go back.

Based yourself in Charlottesville, VA. Take a day to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, and at least one more to go to Richmond. Then drive to the Shenandoah Valley and stay a few days.

That hasn't been torn down yet? Wonder if they have a goofy mayor who can sell it for $1000.00

My advice to the OP- anywhere in the Florida Keys. Perfect weather, great fishing & boating, tons of restaurants and bars. Relaxing if you wanna relax, but plenty to do if you wanna do it.

If he doesn't want to, I'm down for the Keys. Or any beach, for that matter.

Puerto Rico (if they have cleaned up from the hurricane by the time you go). I love it down there...it's beautiful and food is so good.

Thanks, I enjoyed the trip we took down there about 13 years ago. It will be more fun without the kid. 03-wink

Actually, if you have never been, consider Orlando for all the theme parks. I was not all that enthused to go a couple years ago, but we had a great time. Disney World, Universal, SeaWorld, etc. But only go if you can walk for miles daily. About 10 miles daily is what we averaged.

I forgot to mention the Florida Keys. If you just enjoy slowing down to a crawl. Fantastic food, fantastic fishing, incredible sunsets, and night life is way cool. But sadly it can be fairly expensive now.

Best time to hit the Keys is sept/ oct. That's their slow season. We stayed 5 nights on Duval for around $1300. There's a few bars and restaurants that close for "vacation" around that time, but its not nearly as expensive as summer or Christmas/ NYE.

It also happens to be hurricane season.
