Winter Olympics - Fort Bend Owl - 02-08-2018 08:31 PM

Officially the start of the Games is tomorrow night for the USA, but really the competition has already been going on for a day.

The politics of these Games might be the most scrutinized in Olympic history - with the constant specter of the South Korea/North Korea conflict. And then seeing the athletes from the well-known country of OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia) is another reminder how messed up the Olympics have begun (all of the Russian Olympians were barred from the games last December, but some 'clean' athletes have been allowed to compete under the OAR moniker.

Anyone else watching?

They were given an average of 40 condoms each. I'm not sure they even show up to compete.

It's on because the wife is watching figure skating. Pretty much all I care to see is the hockey (men's & women's) and curling. I don't have to work tomorrow so I may try to stay up and watch the US mixed curling team at 11:35 tonight on NBCSN.

I was watching some curling yesterday online. It's okay in very brief spurts but like shuffleboard, it gets old pretty quickly. I will say though if you get a chance, watch the OAR female curler in the mixed curling competition. She's quite easy on the eyes.

Curling is essentially shuffleboard on ice. I can't understand how it became an olympic sport other than they needed something to fill out a roster of events back when curling was added or something.

'What happens in the village stays in the village' is reportedly the mantra of the athletes. I can't say I blame them, how often do 2000+ people in phenomenal shape converge on one place for a couple of weeks?

My sister lives out in Colorado so I've gone skiing there from time to time, I've always found that watching it on TV didn't translate very well. I like watching hockey as a sport moreso than any other, but the lack of NHL talent this time around naturally dampens the enthusiasm. I'll probably watch a lot of the events you never see outside of every four years like bobsledding and curling, along with enjoying that awesome Olympic theme song that gets stuck in your head like the CBS basketball theme every March.

RE: Winter Olympics - Fort Bend Owl - 02-16-2018 12:15 AM

Mixed results from the Olympics in Korea. I'd say Team USA and Korea have to be disappointed. We're winning some medals but we're also missing out on some medals we thought we had in the bag. Take away the half pipe and it would be a pretty small medal total for the Americans. Korea also has to be wondering where are all the crowds? I'm seeing a lot of venues with no spectators there at all.

But I guess the IOC and NBC are happy enough. Ratings are comparable to Sochi 4 years ago, and actually have surpassed those ratings on a few nights, which these days is a win for the TV industry.

You guys are lame.... The alpine skiing events are where it's AT!!!!

RE: Winter Olympics - GeminiCoog - 02-16-2018 01:26 AM

OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia)

Not to be confused with OAR (Of A Revolution).

RE: Winter Olympics - Lord Stanley - 02-16-2018 08:56 AM

I watched skelton(?) last night and the Korean guy won. Outside of the USA getting gold nothing warms my heart more than the local athlete getting the gold. So awesome.

RE: Winter Olympics - EverRespect - 02-16-2018 09:15 AM

I'm watching much more than I thought I would. Didn't watch last night, but have been watching almost every other night. Luckily they have been covering the skiing and snowboarding at great length and not spending all their time on the skating events which they have done in the past, which bore the schit out of me. My big complaint is they aren't covering any of the hockey on NBC's main channel and because I cut the cord, what is on the main channel is what I get. All in all NBC has done a pretty good job. They should ditch their fake news and focus on covering sporting events.
