CBS News affiliate KUTV reported that on Thursday, police discovered the vandalism, but the department is uncertain if it was a student or someone passing through the town. Either way, Hurricane Police Department spokesperson officer Ken Thompson is certain someone knows something.

“Officers have received tips this morning and they're following those leads and so far they haven't generated a credible lead but tips can help us out a lot,” he said.

Police also discovered perpetrators spray painted the words “ISIS is comi” on a wall on the east side of the school. Thompson explained that investigators believe the intention was to write “ISIS is coming,” but the vandals didn't have time to finish.

“That flag represents our country, represents our lives here in America,” neighbor David Morse told Reuters. “I just can't imagine anyone wanting to do anything to that flag.”

The Salt Lake Tribune reported federal agents also assisted in the investigation. Based on information the FBI gave the Hurricane Police Department, they “do not believe this act was perpetrated by someone linked to the Islamic state.”
