Football Rivalries? - Side Show Joe - 02-25-2018 03:08 PM

It's the off-season and I'm tired of realignment talk....

Now that we have finished 5 seasons of football in this configuration of C-USA, are we beginning to see some rivalries develop? If so, which games, and should the C-USA leadership schedule them consistently on the same week every year (Like Texas/OU is played the 1st week in October every year)?

Thoughts?

RE: Football Rivalries? - Volkmar - 02-25-2018 03:12 PM

With you on getting tired of the same old realignment talk. But the rivalry talk is pretty much the same. Some will say there's this or that rivalry developing, and then others will shoot it down, saying we don't have a rivalry with you guys at all yet, and that we have a rivalry with these guys instead. Just the same ol' all over again, I think. This is the stuff that happens when there aren't enough things to talk about, I guess. lol

You guys really should start a baseball program to keep you more engaged this time of the year. We need facilities, you need baseball, and the entire conference needs more money and better exposure. lol

RE: Football Rivalries? - ODUMONARCHZ1 - 02-25-2018 03:17 PM

Idk who our rivalry is. We still have yet to beat middle or wku so not really a rivalry and even though we have beaten other teams and they've beaten us, they're just not the same. Charlotte is closest in proximity but we haven't lost either so idk

Yeah. I get your point. But I do think that after 5 year we are starting to see some trends develop.

In the western Division I think LA Tech is developing some good rivalries with USM (LATech won 2 of 3) and North Texas (LA Tech won 3 of 2). But not with UTSA, Rice, or UTEP. LA Tech has taken 4 of 5 from UTSA and Rice, and UTEP has yet to pick up a win.

USM seems to be having good series with UTSA (at 2-2), LA Tech (3-2), and North Texas (2-3.)

And of course it is no secret North Texas and UTSA have our series.

I'm sure fans of our programs have noticed other series developing too. These are just some I've noticed in the West. I think it's too early to pair UAB, due to their absence for much of the first 5 seasons.

You seem to be equating rivalry status with how close a series is, as you're comparing head-to-head records left and right up there. Here's where you and I have different thoughts. Rivalries are more about the feeling the fanbases get when they face someone. It's more about how much they mutually want to beat each other head-to-head, not so much whether the series is actually close.

There are schools whose head-to-head records are close, but they don't consider themselves true rivals, nor does anyone else. And there are schools where the head-to-head is lopsided, and they're considered one of the greatest rivalries in sports, ergo Texas/Texas A&M, where Texas holds a commanding 76-37-5 lead, and yet both schools even include the other in their fight songs.

I think that how close the series is can help, but I don't think it's the driving force behind what starts rivalries and keeps them going. Just my opinion.

I don't think we have any cross divisional rivalries in football, but I will say one of your fans was fairly demeaning in his regard for North Texas after ODU's very good 10 win season in 2016, and I was very adamant about beating ODU at home in 2017. As a result, ODU was my least favorite team in C-USA East. 04-cheers

But, then FAU stomped a mud hole in us... twice last season, and now I have a program I dislike even more. 03-hissyfit

RE: Football Rivalries? - mturn017 - 02-25-2018 03:58 PM

Fans in our conference calling the end of February "off-season" is part of the reason we have realignment threads. IMO. ODU doesn't have any football rivalries that I can see.

I agree. Records certainly are not the only factor. My thinking was aside from North Texas and UTSA, none of the teams in C-USA West really have a strong dislike for another fanbase or team, so I was looking for other factors. This past seasons USM/LA Tech game concluded after 2 overtimes. In close games and series big plays can be a factor in helping to create rivalries. Not to stir up bad memories, but like the drive we had against UTSA to end the game. Or, like the way UTSA cost us a spot in the championship game back in 2013.

It is the off-season for football. And that is what this thread is addressing.

Here you go. I have found ODU a rival...

You're crazy. Most La Tech fans and UTSA fans hate each other. Opinions vary about whether it is a "rivalry" (yes), but ask any of us how we feel about the other fan base. 05-mafia

Not trying to take away from the thread. Good post, at least better than realignment.

Marshall/WKU has turned into a heated rivalry. I feel that Marshall/ODU could become something in a few years. Cross division rival for us has to be USM which I love to be honest.

Sorry. I didn't realize the UTSA fanbase had that much hate in them. Glad to hear you are building something with LA Tech. Since we are on the topic. Who do y'all hate more... North Texas or LA Tech?

I agree. This has been a good game the last 2 years. How were y'all able to keep it an annual game, and would you like it set on the same weekend every year? Seems like the rest of us are rotating our cross divisional games.

I don't have a dislike for anyone in our conference, but I'll try to answer for others, who can correct me if I'm wrong, and say it's probably about a tie. If I absolutely had to choose one though, it might be North Texas by a very small margin.

I think USM will drop off of our schedule for 2019 as we were their first cross divisional opponent after switching to the west....pretty sure it'll rotate

The resta y’all... ooowee shore luv to beat y’all.

ODU got a couple mentions already. NOT pleased that they came in our house back when we were no less the DEFENDING CHAMPIONS of this here fine league. Plus we thought we might get a rare taste of victory up in Norfolk last year, but, folk no.

Our main CUSA football rival is always our next game. USM, you are on the clock. You might be overlooking little ol’ Rice this year. You go right on ahead. We have been down but we are coming back. And I can’t think of a better place for our coming out party than right off of Brett Favre Way in Down Town Hatty’s Land. Miss your old Hawkeyes logo but your new look has at least helped lately in your series with us. That all comes to a screeching halt, September 22, 2018.

That’s the spirit! Idk if we have a rivalry just yet, but I did enjoy both of those North Texas beatdowns.

Middle was, is, and will always be our #1 rival for n CUSA.

That’s pretty weak lol. I wish the Texas teams had more of a rivalry. There’s no reason you shouldn’t dislike in state schools, or even LaTech.
