Would You Trade CAA Quality For Popularity? - EvanJ - 03-02-2018 07:40 PM

Which of these would you rather the CAA have in Men's Basketball?

Quality Option: What the CAA has now
12th in the Conference RPI
Average RPI rank of 168.1 (the average for all teams is 176th)
Average home attendance of 2,396 (that's what the CAA has)
No TV contract

Popularity Option: A hypothetical
16th in the Conference RPI
Average RPI of rank of 197.8, which is what the Southern Conference in 16th has, and that's 29.7 worse than the CAA
Average home attendance of 3,200 (an increase of a little over a third, I didn't make it one-third because I wanted it to be a multiple of 100)
A regional TV contract with each team averaging 4 games live on all of NBC Sports regional networks on the east coast, SNY, and on TV in the Carolinas but I don't know what channels they have

The end goal in my eyes is quality. One of the best ways to get quality though is via popularity. Would I take a temporary drop in quality if it meant it got better in the long run? I guess but it's hard to really analyze this situation.

And really the end goal really is getting as many teams in the NCAA tournament as you can, but that's done through quality of course.

I like what we currently have. It may be a mismatch of schools but I think it is already stronger than initially ad only improving each season

The most important thing is to have the best quality players on the court and try to win the most OOC games. The CAA has done that and is one of the top mid-major conferences, and that's what I want.
I'm pretty certain that the TV Contract issue is a temporary thing as a result of a screw up by the commissioner. At least that's what I've heard on these boards. The attendance comparison is irrelevant. The Southern Conference gets better attendance because all of their teams are in rinky-dink towns with nothing else to do, and low level college basketball is the best entertainment option available. The CAA has schools in a bunch of the largest media markets in the country, where mid-major college basketball is an afterthought. I do think that the CAA's presence in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore helps the overall product for all teams. So therefore, I really think it's better to have what we have, than what the SoCo has.

The Southern Conference is 16th in the Conference RPI, but none of the other things I said are about the Southern Conference. The 3,200 attendance is an amount I made up. It doesn't refer to the Southern Conference, which averages 2,221.

Just a feeling on my part, but it seems like the CAA is on the verge of getting back to being a 2 bid conference. CofC should be steady over the next few years, NU seems to always compete, William and Mary has become consistent, Towson is always a tough out, Drexel may be on the cusp, and hopefully UNCW can get back on track after losing Keatts.

Most importantly, not many seniors on the all-conference teams.

Popularity increases with better quality for most teams. Our attendance has steadily increased as our quality has gone up. Would much rather CAA with overall increase in quality.

Most of the teams in this league are going to be better next season. We are a couple flukey OOC wins for either Charleston or NU from having 2 bids this season. I think next season might finally be the year since the exodus.
