Why does nothing make sense when it comes to Div.1 football or basketball. - Hilltop75 - 03-18-2018 10:48 AM

1. The hiring away of coaches

. Simple rule here there is no contact to hire a current coach until after their season is over. In football If the team is going to a bowl game no contact until after the bowl game is played. That way the coach that got them to the bowl is the one that coaches.
In Basketball if the team is in the NCAA or NIT Tournaments no contact until they have played their final game.

NCAA Basketall Tourney selection-- If your conference won at least one game in last years tourney your conference is awarded a minimum of 2 bids to the tourney the next year. Or the regular season conference champ gets an auto bid and regular season champs don't play in the conference tournament.... The winner of the conference tourney also goes to the ncaa tourney maybe matched in a play in game against another conference touney winner.

That way your team that won the regular season and you hottest team right now both make it in. But this 9 teams from the ACC and 8 from the SEC is BS.
Its worth 1.9 million dollars to your conference for every game a team plays in the ncaa tourney paid out over 6 years.

Football Tourney- 16 team tourney 10 conference champs and 6 at large.
FCS, Div 2 and 3 have more teams than that and do fine.
I think the most we could hope for is an 8 team playoff with on slot for the best G5.

As you can see UMBC does not even make the tourney as an at large team so if they did not win their conference tourney on a last second shot they are not the 16 seed and beat # 1 Virginia. This was not a fluke they beat them by 20.

A level playing field would also change recruiting and the distribution of wealth. Something the so called power 5 don't want. A team like a UCF football should never go undefeated with no chance for a championship.

So no question MTSU should have been in the NCAA this year as well. ALL of CUSA teams in the 4 post season tournaments all won their first games.

It's a totally rigged system.

I completely agree on the coaching search front, however I have a different idea for the NCAA tourney selection process.

If you do NOT finish at .500 or above in your conference, you are automatically disqualified for an at-large bid.

Totally agree with above .500 record ,,,,,,,,,,, In Football you have to have 6 wins to go bowling

For an auto bid?

At least this year that wouldn't have changed anything, LIU Brooklyn(10-8) and NCCU(9-7) were the only auto bids even close to the .500 mark.

I think he means for an at large bid if you win your conference tourney you should go.

Well that would have taken at least Arizona State, Cuse, Texas and OU out of the mix this year.

Notre Dame and Baylor, both among the first four out, would also be disqualified.

It sounds like you are saying UMBC is a better team than Virginia? Surely, you don't believe this do you? All it shows is, if you don't take an opponent seriously you can lose. Prior to Friday, a number 1 seed had never lost to a number 16. Obviously Virginia didn't expect to have to even show up. They were wrong.

Yes, my bad. Meant to say at large bid, not auto bid.

RE: Why does nothing make sense when it comes to Div.1 football or basketball. - FriscoDawg - 03-18-2018 04:00 PM

I would at least make it that if a team is below .500 in conference regular season, it has to win at least the number of conference tournament games it is below .500 in the regular season to be eligible for an at-large.

Using that rule, these NCAA at-large teams would have been out:
Syracuse (8-10, 1-1 in ACC Tournament)
Texas (8-10, 1-1 in Big 12 Tournament)
Oklahoma (8-10, 0-1 in Big 12 Tournament)
Arizona State (8-10, 0-1 in Pac 12 Tournament)

The only at-large team with a losing conference record that would have still been allowed in would have been Alabama (8-10, 2-1 in SEC Tournament).

And of the First 4 Out, Baylor would have still been out, but Notre Dame (8-10, 2-1 ACC Tournament) would have been eligible for consideration.

The .500 in conference record would be a good idea for the selection committee. They constantly reward mediocrity in the P5 and then watch them fall out of the tournament in the first round. If the NCAA tournament is supposed to be the best of the best, why not put the teams in that owned their league?

Simple. The system is as corrupt as the Chicago city council during the days of Al Capone.

Everything about Division 1 football and basketball makes perfect sense. Well, as long as you're on the inside looking out. It's a perspective thing.

Now, if you say "why is everything in Division 1 football and basketball set up not to deal equitably with all member schools?" You can have the correct discussion.
