With regard to Henderson, he didn’t have an offer. Was a PWO candidate.
Looks like Smith is probably going to Boise
He just received an offer from Pitt, so would assume he would go there. Better level of competition and much better school than Boise. We need to turn our attention to other QB recruits.

So we should give up recruiting a guy just because he has offers from Pitt and Boise St.? Not good reasons in my book. Zach Abercrumbia chose Rice over offers from Stanford, Vandy, Wake, TCU, and many others. By your reasoning, Bailiff should have given up on recruiting him because he has such impressive offers. Unless you know something specific about Riley Smith, I hope the coaching staff continues to recruit every player they think fits at Rice and will improve Rice, without regard to what other offers that player has!

Also, I don't know much about him, but Aubrey Williams, a safety/athlete from Brunswick, GA, recently started following Coach Picazo on twitter, as well as Jorian Clark and Cole Garcia. Perhaps slightly less recently (Twitter doesn't tell you when someone started following someone else), he started following Coaches Vestal, Mack, and Smith, Rice Football, Rice FB Recruiting, and members of the old coaching staff. A number of those listed started following him as well. Cam Montgomery also started following him recently.

We could absolutely use him on defense.

For every Zach Abercrumbia, there are multiples of athletes that would have not chosen Rice. The odds are not likely that he will sign with us, so we need to make sure we are giving more attention to other QB recruits. I'm not advocating ignoring him completely, but we need to play the odds.

As pointed out by others here, if the player's career ambitions are realistic (i.e., not going to the NFL) and his desire is to teach, coach, etc -- it is perfectly rational to chose SWTS I mean Texas State or another state school purely on affordability grounds. Yes, Rice is obviously a stronger academic school, but depending on career path the expected ROI from the experience may not warrant it for all.
I guess it depends on how you define "modest means", but I believe Rice is quite generous with financial assistance. You can run through some scenarios on the calculator here:
https://app.myintuitionapp.org/instituti...testimator
Assuming a family of US-median income ($60k) with $60k in savings (optimistic?), the expected family contribution is less than $10k per year.
- IIRC the average American family's savings are negative, something like -$30k
- An expected family contribution of $10k a year when the family makes $60k is essentially unaffordable.
- Thankfully Rice covers 100% of tuition if your family makes < $80k/year, last I checked at least.
Roughly $18k of the cost of attendance is non-tuition-related ($14k of that is room and board).
Cost - Student Financial Services - Rice University
Quote:2017-2018 Cost of Attendance
Tuition $ 44,900
Fees $ 708
Telecommunications $ 30
Room and Board $ 13,850
Books $ 1,200
Personal Expenses $ 2,500
Total Cost $ 63,188*

If we only go after the ones likely to sign w us, we might as well cancel the program. At least for the time being, it will be an uphill battle for the ones we need to be truly competitive.

Nobody said "only go after the ones likely to sign w us".
If recruiting efforts focus on recruits that are highly unlikely to sign with Rice, then not enough attention will be devoted to the hard work of finding diamonds in the rough.

Sorry, I don’t agree with that approach. We have to go for it, on and off the field.

RE: Mike Bloomgren's 1st Rice recruiting class
Ok, so spend the recruiting budget going after blue chips that aren't even interested in Rice?
C'mon, you know full well that won't work.
And the comparison to battling for a win on-field is silly. Beating a team that isn't interested in losing is in no way analogous to pestering a kid who is uninterested.

Commitment tonight from August Pitre, 6’1” 165 lb 2 Star ATH from Opelousas, Louisiana. Looks like he had at one point been committed to Texas State. Also has offers from Navy, Harvard, and Yale (4.0 GPA).
He’s skinny but from a quick google search, it looks like he’s a really explosive athlete. This article mentions his 43 inch vertical: http://www.katc.com/story/35844012/2017-...gust-pitre

They want him to PWO right now and might do an 11th hour offer if they miss on a couple of other guys.

We've offered Cameron Valentine, a 3-star DE from Richmond (Foster) who was going to go to Texas Tech but didn't sign with them in December.

We've offered Ikenna Enechukwu, a 6-3 DE from Ruskin, MO. He actually committed to Air Force earlier this month but is re-considering that commitment. Other offers include Army, Memphis and Wyoming.

InsideTexas saying that they don't expect Brockermeyer to get an offer but say there's 25% chance that he goes as a PWO.
If he doesn't go to Texas, I think he comes to us as there's been no buzz on the Oregon State front.

6'1 with good grades and a 43 inch vertical sounds like a great pick up.
I'm pleased with how Bloomgren's recruiting seems to be improving over the past few weeks. Mostly encouraged about seeing several out of state recruits. Also like the strategy of going after preferred walk ons from big P5 programs.
