POSTED: 11:17 a.m. EDT September 10, 2002
UPDATED: 2:54 p.m. EDT September 10, 2002

RALEIGH -- A Raleigh police officer driving a motorcycle was killed in an accident Tuesday morning on I-440 near Rock Quarry Road and South Saunders Street.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, Master Officer Charles Radford Paul III, 30, was chasing a burgundy vehicle, possibly a Toyota, around 10:15 a.m. for a speeding violation when he lost control of his vehicle and wrecked into a guardrail between the inner and outer beltline.

Authorities have shut down the section of the beltline and are looking for any possible witnesses.

Paul joined the Raleigh Police Department July 17, 1995 and had been working in the Traffic Enforcement Unit for the past 21 months. He is survived by his wife, Tiffany, and 1-year-old daughter Charil.

Paul was a graduate of East Wake High School and East Carolina University.

Raleigh Police Chief Jane Perlov has scheduled a press conference at 4 p.m. Tuesday to provide more details about the accident.
