I'm not saying throw money to some SEC, ACC or other high profile coach. If one of those schools had an assistant coach who was a candidate, or if some coach from a mid major was available, then at least talk. I don't think hiring someone who is going to take another 2 to 3 years to recruit to build his program is wise. Let's get the best LU fit and get the BB program rolling.
I share your thoughts about Gill. Up until he beat Coastal and then JMU and a strong showing at Nova, I was mixed on Gill. I think he turned a corner at Coastal. A very important corner for the athletic perception of the program.
I think we are on the same page. I think a high profile assistant coach from a top program would be a pretty nice grab for Liberty. And I do think any coach hired for Liberty has to fit the mold of Liberty's beliefs. I guess where I differed was the meaning of high profile. I don't consider an assistant coach a high profile since he isn't a head coach. So I guess does anyone know a good assistant out there?
What happened with McCay? It was all love and roses while he was here. He got Seth Curry and the team was on an upward trend. I remember seeing Barber's wife and McCay's wife interviewed on halftime of a MBB game. It was peaches and cream and a love-in. McCay's wife saying LU was the perfect fit and lots of peace and love. Then he leaves for an assistant position at UVA. Without knowing the specifics, from the outside, that stunk. I felt like I was deceived and he was untruthful. I have little respect for McCay. Can anyone clarify this for me?
I don't know much about the McKay situation as far as behind the scenes information. He talked like Liberty was a destination job for him and he said he didn't want to leave LU for anyone. But it looks like empty words as he left once Seth Curry transferred to Duke. So we brought in Layer who was McKay's assistant for his first of two years before leaving to be the assistant at Marquette (I think, or it was at least another Big East school I think). McKay had a highly touted recruiting class even without Curry and Layer was brought in to keep the good things going at a smooth pace.
It worked the first year as Liberty was first in the Big South until they lost their opening game in the conference tournament. Aside from their improbable run in 2013, I think Liberty hasn't won it's first game in the conference tournament. That's unacceptable for the Big South, and really any conference.
