2. You can spin Stull's inteview however you want. What he said was almost an exact quote. I just didn't put quotations because I knew that one of you would nit pick that as well.

3. I've never hid the fact that I dislike Floyd as the coach of UTEP.

Stull however tipped his hand in that interview yesterday. He made it very clear that the season ticket holders want Floyd there, they are happy to see them win games at home, and that they are the only one's who matter when it comes to gaging success.

Kappy called him out on it and asked him point blank. Shouldn't the NCAA tournament be a priority?

Stull said.

An NCAA tournament bid is not a realistic priority.

MIW is correct, you are the one spinning the interview. But hey, let's let others make up their own mind. Here is the interview, Please tell me if Stull is saying that " A 20 win season is a successful one regardless of whether they make the tourney or not." Stull Interview Relevant part starts around 8:25 mark.

Thanks for posting that. Absolutely people should make up their own minds about what Stull said.

FYI

The relevant question and answer comes at about the 9:15 mark.

Steve Kaplowits asks: It's been 5 yrs. when do you say you can't keep waiting for an NCAA tournament bid.

Bob Stull says: It's not the only criteria we a looking for. Floyd could easily win 26 or 27 games like Doc and Billy did. What he is doing for our season ticket holders is bringing in good teams like Arizona, Washington St. Colorado St. 20+ wins is a good team.

I agree in part with Stull. A program cannot and should not be evaluated solely on NCAA appearances. This is my take on it.

1. Post season tournament appearances should be given 30% weight on an evaluation.
2. Regular season won/loss record and strength of schedule 20%
3. Regular season conference finish = 20%
4. Graduation rate = 30%

By those measures Floyd is doing great with graduation, average to above average in 2 & 3 and slightly below average in #1.

Barbee was pretty bad at the graduation rate measure and was ok in the other three.
Barbee had 1 NCAA tournament, 0 NITs, and 2 CBIs
Floyd has 0 NCAAs, 2 NITs and 1 CBI and turned down another CBI.

If you compare them in an overall program then the two coaches are about equal IMO. At least Floyd likes El Paso and has a respect for Coach Haskins which puts him slightly in front of Barbee.

That is a fair and well thought out assessment.

I find it interesting however that after not making the NCAA tournament agian this year, this critrea comes out. However, before the end of the season, many in El Paso, on this forum and even local media has a "wait and see" attitude thinking that UTEP would win the tournament.

This seems to suggest that it didn't matter how many games the team won or lost, how many players graduated or not, or even where they ended up in the standing. As long as they won the tournament, it was going to be considered a good season.

So the consensus was.......

Before the tournament. Win it and get in and it's a successful season.

After the loss..... That isn't the only measure of a good season.

Sounds like a double standard to me.

And I haven't even started with the double standard regarding Barby. I would need another thread for that one.

That guy was wronged on so many levels.

Barbee was not fully embraced by El Paso but he did some messed up stuff himself. And example would be that he told the group putting on Basketball for the Barrio that he wouldn't speak at their basketball camp because it competed and took away from his UTEP camp. There were other things like that which turned me from a Barbee supporter to a person that didn't care for him. The question with Barbee would be did him doing/saying stuff like that cause people not to like him or did he act that way in response to the cold shoulder that he got from many in El Paso. Not sure which came first. There is no doubt that Floyd must improve the post season results for UTEP. Losing in the first round of post season tournament every time we get has got to change.
