Penny is a legend to me, and probably the only athlete where I would still be awed to meet.
Having said that, square this circle:
1. He has humility.
2. He would take the HC, but no assistant gig, with no D1 experience.
I love Penny, but those two lines seem to not match in my reckoning.
That is one of the issues that I have with Penny. It seems like he only wants to be head coach but not an assistant. By that I take it that he's not wanting to put in the work to be an assistant and earn a head coaching job. If he's not wanting to put in the work to be an assistant would he be willing to put in the work to be a head coach? Hiring a guy as a head coach for a college team with no prior college coaching experience rarely if ever turns out well.
Steve Kerr was never an assistant. And that was a racist, derogatory comment. Folks used to get banned for that.
Never an assistant, just President of Basketball Operations and General Manager of an NBA team for 7 years...
