Well, they might have been getting a little long in the tooth in that live performance, but still, unique to say the least.

"Of all the bands who came from the underground and made it in the mainstream," declared Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, “Devo were the most challenging and subversive of all." That quote kinda blows your mind, when you think about who said it.

Here's my favorite DEVO performance. I guess I dig irony a bit. Not much has changed:

Artist: DEVO
Album: New Traditionalists
Cut: "Beautiful World"
1981 Warner Bros. Records/Virgin Records

Good memories from Devo.

During the summer of 1980 I was stationed aboard the the USS Guadalcanal LPH-7 as an Avionics Technician in the Marine Corps. After we hit the Med several guys had bought some pretty nice stereo gear at the AAFES.

All of us young guys had tons of cassettes to listen to so we always had music playing in our shop. Guys from different work sections would stop in cause we were booming in the Avionics shop.

One day we hooked up the output from our Sony (great decks back then) to an FM Generator we used for repairing one of the helo radios. You could then tune in to whatever frequency we set it on and listen to us throughout parts of the ship.

We ran an antenna wire the length of our hallway to boost reception. We didn't have a microphone so we plugged a nice set of headphones into the mic jack and would just speak into one of the earpieces. Worked the same as a mic.

My first time ever being a Radio DJ. We didn't DJ all the time but if we were bored we'd add that in telling who the music we were playing was. It got bigger and bigger and we were discovered by the brass. I guess they kinda knew how boring it was doing big squares in the Indian Ocean and never shut us down.

Anyhoo. Devo was just becoming known around then. I had 'Are We Not Men' and it got quite a bit of AirPlay.

I finally saw them in 2010 in Louieville at the Forecastle Festival with my youngest son. Good times. Thanks for bringing that one from the memory vault Good Owl.
