Double-switches don't do much for me, but the steal, hit-and-run, and the running game in general do. The 1960s and early 1970s were the best era of baseball to me--Mays, Aaron, Stargell, McCovey, Koufax, Gibson, off the top of my head. It's to baseball as Magic-Byrd to the NBA.

Being in Houston, the late 1960s Astros were a budding powerhouse, but they got impatient and traded it all away. Consider they lineup they could have gone through the 1970s with--C-Jerry Grote, 1B-John Mayberry/Bob Watson, 2B-Joe Morgan, 3B-Doug Rader, SS-Denis Menke/Roger Metzger, LF-Jim Wynn, CF-Cesar Cedeno, RF-Rusty Staub, BENCH-John Bateman, Nate Colbert, Sandy Alomar Sr., Cesar Geronimo, SP-Larry Dierker, Don Wilson, Mike Cuellar, Tom Griffin, Denny Lemaster, RP Dave Giusti, Jim Ray, Claude Raymond.

Grote went to the Mets in 1965. Alomar went to the Mets in 1967. Raymond went to the Braves in 1967. Giusti went to the Cardinals in 1968. Bateman and Colbert went to Montreal and San Diego in the 1969 expansion draft. Staub went to the Expos in 1969. Cuellar went to the Orioles in 1969. Morgan, Menke, and Geronimo went to the Reds in 1971. Mayberry went to the Royals in 1971. Lemaster went to the Expos in 1971. Wynn went to the Dodgers in 1973. Ray went to the Tigers in 1973. Wilson died in 1975. Rader went to the Padres in 1975. Dierker went to the Cardinals in 1976. Griffin went to the Padres in 1976. Metzger went to the Giants in 1978. Watson went to the Red Sox in 1979. Cedeno went to the Reds in 1981. The ended up getting little or no return from any of those deals--3 years of Tommy Helms and Lee May in the Morgan deal was the most they got from any of them. The real damage was done 1968-71. There were unconfirmed rumors that racial tensions played a role in the Staub and Cuellar deals. If the Astros hadn't traded them all away, the Big Red Machine of the 1970s could very easily have been the Big Orange Machine.
