Come on, branding and exposure mean everything. If you graduated from an Ivy or equivalent like MIT, it's gonna impress whoever is the hiring manager, even if you personally aren't worth anything as a worker.

I'm sure in 2007, a recent graduate of George Mason or Boise got a ton of more play than they would have in 2006. The run spurred high school juniors and seniors, among others, to look at their programs, curriculum and general amenities.
