The comments in this thread have given me a much greater perspective on Memphis Nation and how ya'll approach program building. Let's just say I fully understand how you got in trouble with the NCAA in the past...

A person can chase the flash all their lives and end up with little of any substance in the end. Memphis' best approach is to hire a hot up-and-comer from a mid-major program and allow things to build at a steady pace. In this way you can be making real noise by year three.

Hiring a hotshot ex-NBA'r whose only defined skill is wooing high-schoolers to come play on his team is a far cry from what I would call a qualified candidate to run a national college basketball program. His only job opportunity should be as an assistant coach for AT LEAST 2 years at the major collegiate level or a head coaching job at a low-major program. You don't go from HS to Memphis U in one step. The coaches in this league would eat him alive in the X's and O's department.

I'm a Memphis fan and I hope you guys turn things around sooner rather than later but, this smells very similar to a guy that heads off to the casino to try and "earn" his rent money. Hire a strong mid-major star and then Penny as assistant and you've got my approval. Either way I'll cross my fingers...

your bold statement makes no sense...if they wanted that they could keep tubby

this is only tubby's second year and he has them likely 20 wins... their first 20 wins in a few years and you cant deny the progress that he made (even if you think it isnt enough), this is only tubbys second year and he made improvement from year 1 to year 2..and are projected to get better again as almost everyone on their team returns

if steady paced improvement is what memphis wanted they could keep tubby...and save 9 million

wichta fans dont really understand how big city teams are and how bandwagon the fans can be....memphis has lost over half its attendance since tubby took over...2 years ago (most of their revenue)...just being good isnt good enough...tubby eventually could (almost certainly will) make tourney teams in memphis but they'll never be flashy top 5 teams with nba stars. likely wont be seen as a top seed

to sustain the fanbase of big city teams you need more great

penny brings a unique situations

literally if he only gets the players on his aau team to sign with memphis next year (no one else) he would have the #1 national recruiting class in the nation in 2019
and there are still a few 2018 he could snatch
[Image: DXkkxHyX0AArJ10.jpg]

now add larry brown as an assistant who has a college and nba national championship..who turned smu from bottom feeder to national power in 3 years as an assistant

if this goes the way memphis wants this too in 2019 they will be a top 5 team

I dont know if that is realistic. If everything goes the way we want than we will be battling for a conference title and be in the NCAA tournament...draw willing, having a shot at the 2nd weekend.

Top 5 is unrealistic to expect at any time.
