Really, I was impressed by the Boilers on Saturday night! You knew what you had to do to shut our perimeter down ...and you succeeded!

Also, the FT shooting- pretty damn nice, I gotta say!

So, I've got a lot of Boilers in the family, sooo ...lol, gotta be nice 03-wink Good luck! Until we meet in January, that is 03-wink

Newton, IU hang on to edge Purdue

INDIANAPOLIS -- This rivalry has life. Lots of it after Saturday night's Duel in the Dome.

Seventh-ranked Indiana and feisty Purdue stood toe-to-toe in vintage fashion with 32,055 hysterical native Hoosiers packed into the RCA Dome.

With the outcome hanging in the balance, IU's big-game experience and superior size produced a 66-63 victory.

Hoosier power forward Jeff Newton scored each of his team-high 16 points during the second half, when the 2002 NCAA runners-up rallied for their eighth victory without a loss.

Newton's dunk with 1:15 remaining pushed Indiana into a 61-58 lead. Purdue's Willie Deane, who led all scorers with 21 points, pulled the Boilermakers (4-2) to within a point with a pair of free throws with 1:01 on the clock.

But the Hoosiers essentially crossed the finish line when Newton sank two free throws at the 45.7-second mark, and freshman Bracey Wright hit two more with 24.8 seconds left.

At that point, the IU lead was 65-60, and it was not to be for the Boilermakers on this emotion-packed night.

The 6-foot-9 Newton added 12 rebounds to go with his 16 points, and 6-11 center George Leach contributed 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Indiana shot only 37.5 percent from the field, but the Hoosiers outrebounded the Boilermakers 49-35, including 26-15 during the pivotal second half.

The Hoosiers' defense also was smothering throughout, limiting Purdue to 19 field goals in 59 attempts -- 32.2 percent.

Deane, Chris Booker and Kenneth Lowe were a combined 15 of 35 from the floor, but their teammates made only 4 of 24 shots.

In the end, IU had too much inside for Purdue, which got only 10 minutes from 6-10 freshman Matt Kiefer, who hyperextended his knee during Friday's practice.

The Boilermakers also played without 6-11 center Ivan Kartelo, who missed the game with a dislocated right elbow.

"Size," Purdue coach Gene Keady said when asked for the game's key. "Once it got

into the last 10 minutes, fatigue was one of the things that might have hurt Booker.

"If we had had depth, which we will have when we get healthy, hopefully, that rebound thing will start to balance out."

With 12 points and 11 rebounds, Booker played one of his best early-season games, but he -- and his teammates -- struggled to contain Newton when the game was on the line.

"They posted him up more inside," Keady said. "When they dribble penetrate, we have to contain the dribble, and when we didn't do that, he got open.

"It was the normal way you get the ball into the post. They opened up a side, and when you have the 3-point shooters like they have, you can't leave your man and help with somebody else."

Booker certainly had his hands full.

"It was a great challenge to play against (Newton and Leach)," Booker said. "They are two of the best big men in the country on one of the best teams in the country.

"They're both very strong, and each seems to have a great feel for blocking shots. On a few plays, we had to put our backs to them in order to get a shot off. That's something we have to work on."

Without help from Kiefer and Kartelo, and battling foul trouble, Booker essentially was stranded on a big man's island down the stretch.

"They ran a few screens on the ball with their guards, which actually freed Newton up and gave him some space to get away from some of our big men," Booker said.

"That gave him room to work, and he hit a few shots after their dribble penetration. We got out of our defensive principles."

IU has beaten Purdue five consecutive times, but the Boilermakers and Hoosiers will meet again in January, this time in Mackey Arena.

Deane anticipates another thriller, especially now that Purdue has rejoined this rivalry after four consecutive double-digit defeats.

"When there are two rival teams, you know it's going to be a close game," Deane said. "There aren't too many blowouts when there are two rival teams.

"The rivalry is something you can't describe until you experience it. Everybody left it all on the floor."
