Cats finish 9th in golf tourney

- Northwestern's men's golf team shot a 300 as a team Tuesday to finish ninth at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational. NU finished the 54-hole event, held at the Inverness Club, with a score of 906, 28 strokes behind winner Florida.

Junior Tom Johnson (Weaverville, Calif./Del Campo) followed up his 1-under-par second round with an even-par 71 Tuesday to finish third individually (76-70- 71=217) at the first event of the fall season. Two players tied for medalist honors at 215, two strokes ahead of Johnson.

Seniors Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden) also finished in the top half of the 75-player event. Harrington tied for 29th at 14-over-par (75-77-75=227), while Widerstedt came in tied for 37th at 16- over (75-76-78=229).

Other finishers for NU included junior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird), who finished tied for 54th at 20-over-par (80-77-76=233) and sophomore Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland), who ended up 71st at 27-over-par (81- 78-81=240) in his first collegiate event.

The 'Cats are off until Sept. 30, when they host the Windon Memorial Clasic at the Glen View Club in Golf, Ill.
