Miami, Fla. – In its rich baseball tradition, FIU has had many players selected in the Major League Baseball draft, plus many others who have signed free agent contracts following the draft.
FIU junior pitchers Derek DeCarlo – a ninth-round selection of the Milwaukee Brewers and Mark Worrell – a 12th-round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals continued that tradition by recently signing professional baseball contracts.
DeCarlo has reported to the Pioneer League and the Helena Brewers, the Rookie League affiliate for the Milwaukee Brewers. He currently has a 1-0 record with a 5.19 ERA through four appearances.
Worrell has reported to the Appalachian League and the Johnson City Cardinals, the Rookie League affiliate for the St. Louis Cardinals. Through seven appearances, he has a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and a league-leading three saves. He has also struck out 17 in 9.2 innings of work.
DeCarlo and Worrell become the 15th and the 16th players from FIU currently playing professional baseball.
