NCAA finalists to play, perhaps at fieldhouse, in ACC/ Big Ten Challenge.

May 08, 2002

The Indiana University basketball team won't have to wait long for a rematch with Maryland.

Eight months after the Terrapins defeated the Hoosiers to win the 2002 national championship in Atlanta, the teams will meet again in this year's ACC/Big Ten Challenge the first week in December, according to a member of the IU athletic department.

The game will be played at a neutral site, likely Conseco Fieldhouse, although final arrangements have yet to be made. The United Center in Chicago is also a possibility.

ESPN media relations director Josh Krulewitz said the complete pairings of the series between the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big Ten will be announced in about two weeks. All games will be shown on either ESPN or ESPN2.

"We're aware that there has been some discussion about possible matchups, but we're not in a position to confirm anything at this time," Krulewitz said.

One other matchup, Ohio State vs. Duke, has been reported by newspapers in Ohio.

Neither IU nor the Big Ten would confirm the IU-Maryland matchup. Indiana's schedule is expected to be released in August.

The Hoosiers will open the 2002-03 season at the Maui Invitational Nov. 25-27.

IU is expected to have nonconference home games next season against Southern Illinois, Charlotte and Vanderbilt, with away games at Ball State and Louisville. IU will also play Kentucky at Freedom Hall, and Purdue at the RCA Dome during the nonconference portion of the schedule.

Indiana is still working on the possibility of two more nonconference home games.

The Maryland game will mark IU's second ACC/Big Ten Challenge game. The Hoosiers did not participate in the event the first two years, but played North Carolina last season at Chapel Hill, N.C. IU won that game, 79-66.

Woohoo! Can't wait til December!!
