Why was this moved and who moved it? This was the most interesting discussion of the evening. Unbelievable...give people power, and they will abuse it.

You can't argue with their success but the cupboard was hardly bare when Pitino got there....unlike here. I'll take Cal.....
That argument is bs...it's been 5 years...that's a possible 20 players the way Cal recruits. The 'pitino had more to work with argument' is crap. Lville wasn't exactly loaded with mac all americans.
Pitino followed a Hall of Fame Coach....Cal followed the Tic years....(disallowing the mulligan that was Johnny Jones)....and thats crap?
Not to ruin your fantasy but our HOF coach ran his program into the ground. We had something like 12 wins in Crum's last season. The cupboard was mighty 'bare'.

I would take Cal, i'm not sure Pitino would sell the city or the University the way Cal does. You can say what you want, but Pitiono had a lot more going for him at L'ville than Cal had here. They have a way larger fan base, 19,000 compared to our base of about 10,000, willing to pay what it takes to fund a major college program, instead of having to depend on several deep pockets to fund ours. If you thought the CUSA tickets were expensive, go look and see what it costs to be a season ticket holder at L'ville. You will understand why they are going to The BE, and have a $46,000,000 budget, while we operate on a $22,000,000 budget.

simply, yes...although I loved Kirk
Oh, did we hire Kirk over K?
Maybe we have different ideals...I was thinking Coach K from Duke.
Exactly who I am talking about. Your question is "Cal or Pitino: if we had to do it over again"

That works under the assumption we CHOSE Cal over Pitino, which was not the case. That's like saying we screwed up by not hiring Coach K before he went to Duke.

Creating a wish list is one thing... passing it off as "what might have been" is another.
We should've hired John Wooden way back when, damnit!
We've proven not to be a forward looking university, although NCUSA has great potential!!!! 03-nutkick
You would have been wanting to fire Coach K after the first 5 years.

I haven't met one fan who is "striving" for NIT banners. I think most fans are making the best out of a bad situation. For example, if you find out your wife is cheating on you with the milkman, smile because the cheese will always be fresh.

Most fans are just supporting their team because they are still playing basketball. I dare say most fans would gladly trade the last three wins for one loss in the NCAA Tournament.

Many outsiders & critics confuse support for acceptance & I just don't believe that to be the case. Sure, the fairweathers walked away saying "Damn Tigers" as Darius dropped to the FEF floor in tears on national TV. The rest of accepted our fate & cheered the team on because they are our team.
I cried when Darius missed those shots, not for me, but for him, and I'm glad to see the city get behind him.

And I love cheese.
You are also full of sh%%!!!

the question is--with all the adversity, would Pitino have handled it better? It is easy to look at their success and say that could have been us, but I am not sure with the things that have happened you could expect much more.

Hmmm, a future HoF/ Final Four in his 3rd or 4th year coach, or a constantly NIT bound disaster...

I don't think that is fair Mystic--if ( and I know it is aq big if) Petino had suffered all the adversity Cal had, would he have made the final 4? Hard to say--

I think it is safe to say the jury is out. next year is a pivotal year for the direction of our program.

Nothing in life is fair. Most of us adults accept this and I know Calipari does. A lot of things that happened this past season were not fair. Some were Cal's errors; others were totally beyond his control. But everyone deserves a mulligan; a do-over - Calipari gets his for the disappointing season last year.

Here is reality: Louisville was MEMPHIS' biggest rival in basketball and we saw that team advance to the Final Four with Pitino in his 4th season.

Meanwhile MEMPHIS settled for the NIT for the 3rd time in Calipari's 5th season.

I wholeheartedly concur that next year is immensely pivotal for the overall direction - and perception - of the Calipari reign at MEMPHIS. The TIGERS will be playing in a much weaker C-USA conference. UAB and maybe Houston are the only legitimate competition. MEMPHIS must win big, get into the NCAA tournament, and advance the the Sweet Sixteen at a minimum for the year to be considered a success.

There can be no excuses or rationalizations for falling short. None.

Calipari has already made it clear he is tightening the reins on the discipline (both on and off the court), and this is a good thing. I anticipate a tremendously successful 2005-06 basketball season!
