The ACC missed a golden oppurtunity to help advance the spirit of college athletics by inviting Boston College over East Carolina. What a great addition East carolina would have made to the ACC. Wish it would have happened but since it did not I hope you guys enjoy the trip to Boston. I know some of you do not think ECU is worthy of addition to the ACC but I think you would have found out differently after a few games with this University.

Wake Forest has owned ECU the past few years in football. BC is much more challenging...and Wake beat them on their home field last year too.

ECU should affiliate with the Southern Conference where they would have a great instate rivalry with Appalachian State & could fight Furman & Georgia Southern for supremacy on the gridiron.

!Not only that, but we would bring a little life to this board 03-wink ! We travel well. So well, in fact, that ACC oponents go out of there way to keep us out of their stadiums. <a href='http://gopack.collegesports.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/041904aaa.html' target='_blank'>Here is proof of how well we travel, and how much you can't stand us!</a>

Here is the article...

Quote:Tickets For NC State-ECU Baseball Game Go On Sale

Advance Sale Limited To Wolfpack Club & Friends Of Baseball Members Only

April 19, 2004

RALEIGH, N.C. - Tickets for Wednesday night's NC State baseball game with East Carolina are on sale for members of the Wolfpack Club and NC State Friends of Baseball through the NC State ticket office at 865-1510.

Members of both groups are urged to buy their tickets in advance and avoid what is likely to be an overflow walk-up crowd at the gate, and a likely sellout.

It is pretty sad, that you will do what you can to keep our fans out.

I laugh at people who try to talk sports and don't know the difference between Division IA and I-AA (which is where the Southern Conference plays). There is no division above Division IA, my dear RiverPirate. 03-wink

Wouldn't you rather ECU be competitive in the Southern Conference & be in contention for the I-AA National Championship every year instead of sitting in the cellar of the ACC for football & basketball?

My dearest Lucy,

I think you know what I meant Division Iaa. And for your informaton with the addition of ECU in the ACC, it will be other schools looking up at us on who is the best program. East Caroina football would definately not be a cellar dwellar in the ACC. The basketball program would get a shot in the arm and I know would become very competetive in the league. Look at VT's basketball, they have always been a real powerhouse haven't they? I can assure you one thing, ECU would not be in the cellar every year as you suggest in the ACC, just the contrary. The attitude f the likes of you only proves one thing and that is certain schools in the ACC have always feared East Carolina University and do not want to enable the Pirates to compete. Because when the playing field has been level, East Carolina always sems to come out on top on the gridiron. As for basketball, a few years and we would be very very competetive. As for oyu Lucy what school are you here posting for? Lets se if that program is a "cellar dweller" Come clean and speak for your program. It just may be that you speak for a program that is not as great as you think.

Even Duke can beat ECU at football. :roflol: 23-16.

As far as basketball, ECU doesn't stand a chance against anyone except UVa and Clemson. Please, keep dreaming. :chair:

I've already referenced my alma mater, Wake Forest. You'll also find me posting for my hometown team, Georgia Tech.

Both teams are in the upper echelons of the ACC in basketball (and for that matter, the country). Let's look at the 2004 final RPI rankings:

dook - 1
GT - 7
Wake -16
NC State - 19
Maryland - 20
UNC - 22
Boston College - 23
FSU - 53
Virginia - 54
Clemson - 94
Virginia Tech - 100
ECU - 152
Miami (FL) - 165

Yep, ECU fits in there quite nicely...

Let's move on to football...to the 2004 final Sagarin rankings:

FSU - 6
Miami (FL) - 7
Maryland - 10
Clemson - 17
NC State - 26
Virginia - 27
GT - 33
Virginia Tech - 36
Boston College - 37
Wake - 46
dook - 75
UNC - 93
ECU - 143

Miami may be below ECU in the RPI, but they more than redeem themselves with a stellar Sagarin rating. ECU had a 1-11 football season in 2003, including 3 losses to teams that are or will be in the ACC (Miami, Wake, UNC).

With both football & basketball programs being below the standard existing for the current ACC schools, it is little wonder that the conference did not look to Greenville for an addition.

Thank you for the conversation though... :D

Granted, we had a down year (or two) in football, but the Basketball RPI is skewed. Heck we beat VT for the past two years. There is no way that they should be that far ahead of us. In fact, they should be behind us!

Don't worry, we'll get ours, but thanks for showing your absolute arogance!

I'm out cause it's not my conference's board.

I don't think anybody is that crazy about VPI's invitation to the ACC anyway. We all kinda got suckered into that one. But, they do bring in big-time football. It's the other half of division 1-A football in Virginia.

ECU has a passionate fanbase, but -- let's face it -- if we're not gung-ho about VT joining, why would we be in favor of ECU? They would be the fifth ACC football program in the state of NC. And, that would really water down the talent for all of us. I do agree that their football program will rise again, but I don't think it'll ever be ACC caliber. (I know UNC's isn't really ACC caliber right now either, but this is one of the lowest points of our existence).

Then, there's basketball. ECU has improved there, but I don't think we even have to discuss whether they'd be able to compete in the ACC year in and year out.

And, what about other sports? ECU is really nowhere to be found. And, they're average academically as well. So, basically, they're a one-trick pony -- and, lately, they haven't even excelled at that.

I don't mean to talk down to ECU or its fans. It's a fine university and I want to see it succeed. I just don't think that would happen in the ACC.

Other sports? Nowhere to be found?

Don't look now, but ECU is ranked top 10 in two baseball polls. So far we are 3-0 vs. the ACC this year (beat Clemson twice and Dook once, and we play NCSU tonight). How did you guys do against Clemson? We have been to the regionals for the last several years, and I believe two super-regionals.

Then you want to talk about academics?

OK, I lied....I have more info to post.

Take a look at these <a href='http://chronicle.com/stats/ncaa/ncaa-results2.php?State_Type=All%20states&Division_Type=0&Conference_Type=Atlantic%20Coast%20Conference&Athlete_Type=2' target='_blank'>Graduation Rates for the ACC</a> and then compare them to <a href='http://chronicle.com/stats/ncaa/ncaa-results2.php?State_Type=All%20states&Division_Type=0&Conference_Type=Conference%20USA&Athlete_Type=2' target='_blank'>The Grad rates for CUSA--ECU in particular.</a>

ECU ranks third in CUSA in Football Player Grad rates, and ECU would rank 4th in The ACC for the same category (behind Duke, UVA, & WFU). Hey JD, that puts us ahead of UNC 03-wink !

OK, now I'm gone  !

Take a look at <a href='http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/ranknatudoc_brief.php' target='_blank'>US News & World Report's 2004 listing of National Universities - Doctoral</a>:

You will notice the list is broken down into Top Schools, then Tier 3, then Tier 4.

The following schools were found in the Top Schools section:

5 - Duke
21 - Virginia
28 - Wake Forest
29 - UNC
37 - Georgia Tech
40 - Boston College
53 - Maryland
60 - Miami (FL)
73 - Virginia Tech
78 - Clemson
84 - NC State
112 - FSU

You will find ECU listed in Tier 4 which picks up at #191...

Just to update this thread...

ECU is now 4-0 against the ACC in Baseball this year...

Beat Clemson twice in Greenville
Beat Duke @ Duke (now they don't want to come play us in Kinston)
Beat State @ State (I wonder if they are going to drop the return visit as well)

Resume ECU bashing now!

First off, I'll start by admitting that I'm an ECU alum. That said...

ECU, in no shape, form or fashion, belongs in the ACC. ECU, in all shape, form and fashion, belongs in the Southern Conference where it can make a positive name for itself.

I don't think this is meant as an ECU-bashing thread. I know I didn't mean to use it as such.

I want to see ECU succeed. I don't think that would happen in the ACC. It's already a smaller school than both UNC and State, so funding going to ECU is less (and will remain less, no matter what). That would seem a little unfair to me if the three schools were in the same conference. It makes me think of maybe a Michigan and Western Michigan being in the same conference. The bigger of the two schools is always going to have a lot more advantages, and that eventually squeezes the life out of the smaller one.

ECU has some good sports programs scattered around. Their baseball program is top-notch (probably the best all-around). The football program has a lot of fan support, but is going through a lull right now. As I said before, I think we all know that the basketball program isn't ACC caliber.

It just befuddles me as to why Pirate fans would want to hamstring themselves like they would if they joined the ACC. Seems like baseball would compete and be fine. But, Elon could probably compete there and be fine too... and I don't see anyone scurrying to get them into the ACC. I'm sure football would be supported and ECU would make some noise here and there, but I doubt they'd ever be a serious contender for the ACC title. And, it would take a miracle to get there in basketball.

Where exactly would they stack up in all the Olympic sports? Maybe somebody has Sears Cup rankings here that they can add (I'm a little too lazy to do the research tonight). Also, Lucy posted the academic rankings. It doesn't mean ECU is a bad school -- it isn't. But, there's obviously no benefit academically to the ACC adding ECU.

The choice just seems obvious to me. If simply for the size of the school and funding it receives, ECU needs to stay in a mid-major conference or even revisit I-AA. I think I speak for many when I say that there's no shame in that at all. It's really more fair to ECU because it allows them to compete on a more level playing field.

Actually, you are right. ECU does not need to be in the Acc. Never lost to UVA, won 4 of the last 5 from NCSU, 2 of the last 3 from Miami.

ECU really belongs in the SEC. Why ask to be the red haeded step child in the Acc, when you should actually be in the SEC, and play real football teams.
