Former Wake Forest tennis champion plays her way into main draw

June 20, 2003

Winston-Salem Journal - Bea Bielik, who won the NCAA singles championship at Wake Forest in 2002, played her way into the main draw at Wimbledon on Wednesday, defeating Germany's Sandra Koesel 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 for her third victory at the Wimbledon Qualifying Tournament.

Bielik, who defeated Tara Snyder and Ivana Abramovic earlier in the week, will play Amelie Mauresmo of France in her first match at Wimbledon, which will begin Monday.

Way to go, Bea! Would love to see a Deacon victory today!

Unfortunately Bea lost in straight sets in her Wimbledon debut:

Quote:LONDON - Former Wake Forest women's tennis player Bea Bielik was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by #33 Svetlana Kuznetsova from Russia in the first round at Wimbledon Tuesday afternoon. Bielik, the 2002 NCAA Singles Champion and Player of the Year, played her way into Wimbledon's main draw with three straight wins in qualifying play.

She ended up playing the #33 seed after Mauresmo dropped out of competition.
