Quote:Wake Forest golfer Bill Haas has qualified for the U.S. Open after sharing medalist honors at a sectional qualifier in Rockville, Md. on Thursday.
Following a weather delay, Haas shot 69-64 in the 36-hole qualifier, tying at 9-under 133 with Rod Pampling and Hidemichi Tanaka. Haas was competing in a field of 156 players that included PGA Touring pros such as Larry Mize, Hal Sutton, Noaln Henke, Mark Brooks, Spike McRoy, John Daly and Luke Donald.
The U.S. Open takes place June 12-15 at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill. Haas, a two-time first-team All-American, will join his father, Jay, at the event. The elder Haas was granted a full exemption into the tournament based on his 12th-place finish at last year's Open.
Other former Deacons gaining exemptions into the 2003 Open include Scott Hoch and Len Mattiace. Billy Andrade will also participate after finishing second at a sectional qualifier in Atlanta.
The last time the US Open had a father/son combo playing was in 1975 with Jack & Gary Nicklaus.
