The point is that those logos are the OFFICIAL logos of the teams, your's is a blatant ripoff of our OFFICIAL logog that you call your own. Be original and no one will complain, the fact that you took something off of someone else's idea and claimed it as yours is what digs in most of our skins.

I guess I'm a blundering idiot, but I prefer the Tiger head to the leaping Tiger through the M.
Don't know why...don't know Bossman, don't care about all the politics, just me, on the field or on a helmet, that would look better.
Somebody without an agenda and with some photoshop skills, superimpose that on the 50 yard line of the Liberty Bowl. Let's see what it looks like. I have seen complaints here that the current logo doesn't look right on the field, because they can't center it.

They fixed that this year. The "M" is now centered and it looks great.
I like both logos. I prefer the "leaping M" because it's unique, shows a leaping Tiger, and incorporates an "M" for Memphis. However, the Tiger head is fine by me. One of my favorite t-shirts has the different Tiger football helmets on the back and the Tiger head on front (I believe it also says Tiger Nation). The Tiger head would definitely not deter me from buying a shirt or hat. The overall design is what I look for. I've seen horrible designs with the "leaping M" logo and horrible designs with the Tiger head, and I've seen great designs for both.

the logo can be centered, you just have to decide if you want the M centered, or the entire logo.
In the past, most of the apparal has had the entire logo centered, which always made it look off. Most have since started centering the M, which looks better. But if they don't resize the logo just a bit, it starts to wrap around on things like hats.

Not only LOOKS better, but does a much better job of saying UNIVERSITY of MEMPHIS (which is exactly what it was designed to do). The Floating head could easily stand for any one of about a thousand middle schools, highschools, community colleges and universities. More important, it is totally unnecessary. You don't dilute a good wine with water, and you don't dilute a 12-year old image (actually 28 years counting the MSU days) with a weak, unnecessary logo.

That Louisville logo doesn't make me think Louisville. Half the time I'm confusing it with Arizona's floating head logo.

You are addressing a problem that was initiated years ago when the university settled on Tigers as a mascot. When you see a Razorback, Longhorn, or Gator on a helmet, you don't have to guess who it belongs to. A distinctive Tiger will say volumes. Those who don't know who we are aren't going to be helped much just because there is a "M" with a Tiger jumping through it. The university would be best served by coming up with a logo or brand that is appealing and that people would want to buy and would be unique to the university. I'm always disappointed that "Pouncer" isn't more distinct from other Tiger mascots so that he could be immediately recognized as the Memphis Tiger by those not in the immediate Memphis family.

A logo is forged from success, not the catchiness of the logo. If we contended for national championships year in and year out, the leaping M logo would have strong brand recognition. I believe the success & exposure of our basketball program has and will continue to make our logo more recognized and well thought of. I also believe that the leaping M logo is more widely recognized than you think- not because of the M alone but because of the uniqueness of that logo coupled with our three years of modest football success (and more importantly the number of times we were on national TV) and recent basketball success.

Agreed.

Quote:THE LOGO
The University of Memphis' official logo has been redesigned by Craig Thompson, from Disciple Design in Memphis, Tenn.
The original logo was an MSU with a leaping tiger coming out from behind the letters. The new logo is an "M" with a leaping Tiger coming up over the center of the "M."
The floating tiger head blob is just a lousy cropping job on a good logo.
