I think it's tungsten (which is why it's used in light bulb filaments).... but high school chemistry was a long time ago, and I could be wrong.

You might be right... I think tungsten is the metal with the highest melting point, but carbon or another nonmetal might be higher.


EDIT:
I cheated by going to webelements.com... it looks like carbon wins by 105 K.

It is indeed C which surprised me a little bit.

Tungsten is one of my favorite elements too. I debated about giving my son the middle name of Tungsten, because then the question would be, "Is is middle initial 'T' or 'W'?"!

That's awesome! I'll have to remember that one, I'm sure my fiance wouldn't be too keen on that however.

I you think about the way carbon work whenever you burn something there always seems to be some carbon left lying around. A remember how much pressure and temperature it has to go thru to become a diamond.
