If you keep a minimal balance in your checking account I could see how that could be a real problem. I did not read the entire article but I would think if you went inside they would run it through their regular way and you could avoid this problem.

I have a bo-bo Maestro debit card so I don't count, but who doesn't have to enter a PIN for debit purchases?

My check card swipes the same whether debit or credit..and it hits the $ teh same way so.... I can't figure what the debit vs credit ? is all aobut when I use it. Now if I used a CREDIT card I wonder if the debit vs credit meaning changes...like if you say debit is considered a cash advance by your credit card company.

I also have a check card, but if I hit the Handy Mart on the way out of Greenville down to Kinston, I'll hit Debit, then enter the pin, and pump. Some mornings (probably b/c they are closing the register) the Debit option won't work, I'll choose Credit and it doesn't ask for a pin, so they don't quite work the same.

My point (which I forgot to make!) is that check cards actually act differently in the way they are processed between debit and credit transactions, or at least that's the impression I have been left with.

This actually happened to me a few weeks ago. When I called the bank's automated number to routinely check on my recent charges, there were back-to-back $10 charges. I knew the wasn't right and just thought it was a glitch in their system. A couple days later when I called back in, that mystery $10 charge was gone.
