the Preakness odds has SMarty Jones a 8-5 odd

why is it 8 to 5 instead of like 30-1? every other horse is a x-1 odd

Notice that at 8-5 the odds are considered better than 2-1 (2-1 vs. 1.6-1). So Smarty Jones is favored more than any horse at x-1. Just a way to show how much more a horse is favored over the x-1 format.

I'm actually surprised - i thought the first reaction after the Derby was that he had no chance of winning the Preakness. Maybe it's just because he did win the Derby that is forcing these odds. I'm just proud he's from the Philly region. :D
