The University of Maryland men's basketball program has received an oral commitment from Good Counsel High School power forward James Gist, who is expected to sign with Maryland in November and join the Terrapins in 2004.
Gist, 6 feet 8, 215 pounds, averaged 13.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots as a junior at the Wheaton school last season. Good Counsel coach Tim McKenna said Gist chose the Terps over Providence, Virginia, Georgetown and Tennessee.

"He's a very athletic, long big man who runs the floor very well," McKenna said. "He's an up-tempo kind of big guy. He's kind of a Chris Wilcox-type."

Maryland coach Gary Williams has one more scholarship to give to the incoming class of 2004.
