Cougars has history, but I agree with the article on that one. There are enough cat names out there to make you want to gag. But, the pros to it are the ABA history behind it and the fact that it is truly unique in the pro sports world.

I was thinking "Royals" because that ties in with the Queen City theme -- and there is a prominent AAU team known as the Charlotte Royals. But, the only thing that I don't like about that is that there is already a major league team with that name (the Kansas City Royals). I really want us to have a name that is unique to the sports world.

I also agree that singular names like "Spirit" are dumb.

What does that leave us with? The other good name that has local history has been stolen from us by New Orleans ("Hornets").

There was an article in the Observer a few weeks back about the name "Charlotte Counts." I hope that one got shot down pretty fast....

I've been thinking on this for awhile now and haven't had any epiphanies. Anyone got any ideas for cool names?

Yes, they have nothing to do with Charlotte, but aren't they unique?

We'll save Flamingos for a Miami women's soccer team or something.

I'm trying to think of things that are native to Charlotte -- or the state of NC -- and its history. I think that's a good place to start. Some of the things I came up with:

1. "Tar Heels" (that'll never fly)
2. First airplane flight
3. Cornwallis' reference to Charlotte as a "hornets' nest"
4. Tobacco
5. "The Queen City"
6. Banking center

I don't really get anything good from that except "Hornets." Damn New Orleans and George Shinn. :mad:

hmm...they could be called simply the "Flight" like the Miami "Heat".

What do you think? "The Charlotte Flight"...sounds a little strange but oh well!

You could be called the Queens, but that's just not right.
