GONZAGA 69, (25) NO CAROLINA ST 60

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RECAP | GAME LOG
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Tony Skinner, Cory Violette and Richard Fox gave No. 25 North Carolina State a rough introduction to the Jimmy V Classic.

Skinner contributed 14 points, Violette 12 and Fox nine and a career-high 17 rebounds as Gonzaga handed the Wolfpack their first defeat, 69-60.

The Bulldogs (6-3) took the lead for good, 49-47, on a 3-pointer by Blake Stepp with 9:31 to play that commenced an 8-0 run. The Wolfpack (5-1) got no closer than three points thereafter.

It was Gonzaga's first victory in four games this season against a major-conference opponent. The Bulldogs previously lost to Indiana, Kentucky and Georgia.

Scooter Sherrill scored a career-high 22 points for NC State, which won the national championship in 1983 under late coach Jim Valvano, for whom the tournament is named.

The Wolfpack were playing in the Jimmy V Classic for the first time in its eight-year history. Proceeds are used for researching cancer, the disease that claimed Valvano's life.

What he said. Good to see them bounce back after a tough game against UGA over the weekend.

Gonzaga took out State...huh?

Great, another team we can beat.

Need to be 10-2 out of conference and 8-8 in it to
reach the NCAA's. We'll have a shot in 7 of 8 home
games and could win at least two on the road.

Just thinking outloud. And waiting for our Nationally ranked
recruiting clas to arrive next year along with getting our top
8 back from this year.

Hmmm...Is there a new "power" on the horizon.

So, I don't want to hear any more talk about Matt Doherty's offense and how there are a limited number of set plays -- and players basically make things happen on their own. I don't want to hear how we have no half-court game.

State is supposed to be running their own version of half-court basketball -- pick and rolls, great passing, etc. -- and all I saw when I watched last night was three-pointers galore and players trying to make things happen on their own.
