Because his birthday is after the October 17th deadline. I don't know about the other states, but the 2 stats I've lived in have had a deadline for grades at Oct. 17th.
See, he was born so late in 79, that he's in the same grade as people who were born in the early part of 1980.
EX: I was born in February, 1987. One of my friends, in my grade, was born in November, 1986.

If so, there is no deadline here (to my knowledge) for grades, just the typical December 31st. For example, I was born in November, 1987, and I am in the same grade as a friend of mine who was born in February, 1987.

I was born in '79, and I graduated in 2001. Seems that even if Sanders missed some kind of cut-off that year, he still would have graduated in 2002 (a year behind me). As it is, he seems to be still going.
I don't really care one way or the other, though. He could have redshirted one year for all I know (or care)....

He didn't redshirt, although I think he may have played five years in high school (public and private)

Jenibu, there must have been a restriction in 95, because I remember being pissed off when my friend missed the cutoff by 3 days. (His bday was Oct. 14th)
Casey might have played 5 years in HS, cause he did go to Tampa prep, which means he might have had to "reshirt" a year in HS.

I entered in 1992 so I guess its possible that the terms were different in 1995- but if this friend was the same age as you, wouldn't he have already been admitted? Maybe he had lived in another state previously and was behind a year due to that....

He had just moved that summer, and we had gotten to be really good friends. He got held back though. I was so pissed at the school.

That sucks, but I think he may have been held back from the state he came from because the same thing happened to a friend of mine. Either that or he was just too stupid for your school

FYI: The age cutoffs for school apply only to entering first grade. If you move after entering first grade in one state, then cutoffs that might be different in your new state of residence are null & void. Also, age cutoffs for entering school are typically at the first of a month (i.e. the child must be 6 by 9/1 in order to enter first grade that year), so the 10/17 cutoff sounds a little fishy.
FWIW (just because it's a funny story), a friend of mine whose birthday was 12/26 was living in North Dakota when he began kindergarten. At that time most states had a calendar year cutoff of 12/31. During the summer after kindergarten, his family moved to Louisiana which was one of the first states to move the age cutoff back to Sept. So his parents go to enroll him in school and find that he'll have to repeat kindergarten because he was not 6 by 9/1 of that year. As I said, the age cutoffs do not apply until first grade...his older brother still gives him grief about it to this day: "***, is so smart because he took kindergarten twice. He can build Play-Doh figures better than anyone I know..."

The North Carolina cut-off is some silly date in mid-October or so. (It's been a while since I needed to know.) But Boy & Girl are 3 years apart in age but 2 grades apart because of the goofy cut-off dates. Boy is old in his class and Girl is almost youngest in hers.
I have a friend whose Dad made him repeat 8th grade so he could grow taller and not be in direct competition with another guy in basketball. It was awful cause My friend was a straight A student and had to sit through all of it again. He slept alot in class. (I hate pushy parents.)
The bigger guy played at Winthrop but was kicked outta school for partying. He's a creer Marine. Highly decorated and as highly ranked as a non-officer can be. My friend played at Emory & Henry (not unc as his father dreamed) and graduated from Wake law. He's a judge now.
