(REALLY??? NO!!!!!) lol "Hey, I am a Duke fan, but there is NO WAY I would wear that shirt today-- they sucked last night"-- (ok, these kind of fans we DONT need--I guess some people only root for their teams when they win) and finally....... Three national championships is outstanding for K, but only two of them came while Dean was coaching. If you really want to compare Dean and K head up, then compare then when they actually had each other to go against -- not when one of them was gone and the other dominated the league in his absence.

I didn't make a judgment on who was better between Coach K and Coach Smith. I think they are both excellent coaches in their own right.

But, since you brought it up:

Bubas coached against Dean in the first few years of his career (eight, I believe). Dean had 12-2 ACC records the last 3 years of Bubas' career, won all three ACC championships, and made the Final Four each of those years. So, you can really only say that Bubas dominated Dean from 1961 to 1967... because Dean had made his niche by that point (which is an understatement).

K coached against Dean for the first 17 years of his career, and his last few seasons against Dean were among his worst. In fact, Dean's last loss against Duke was in 1993 (he retired in 1997).

Coach K is a great coach, but he has also benefitted the last five years from the stepping down of a legend at UNC.
